The new issue of The Advocate has a story about a swell new option for transgendered children: hormone-blocking drugs to halt the onset of puberty. Call us crazy, but does this not sound like a dangerous tool in the hands of a neurotic mother who a) has fucked up ideas about what her child's sexuality is or isn't, or b) might want to keep her kid from growing up? This is a complicated issue to be sure. On the one hand, we're all for making the lives of trans teens easier and helping all those pretty young ladies trapped in boy bodies avoid years of electrolysis and facial feminizing surgery.
On the other hand, given our experience with crazy parents, we're loathe to give them that much control over children's sexuality. As Hillary Clinton has suggested, children should be raised by a village, or at least on a farm far away from us. Of course, we do want all the little George/Ashley's to recognize their dream of dolls and frilly clothes. We just wish we could trust the parents.
