Barack and Hillary are still spending campaign ad dollars and making grand statements to woo gay voters in the remaining primaries, in particular in Pennsylvania where the primary is scheduled for April 22. Between the many college campuses and the gay-friendly metropolises of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh*, the candidates are banking on a large enough gay voting block that it could mean the difference of a state-wide majority at the polls.
The state's largest gay newspaper, The Philadelphia Gay News, just put to bed an interview with Senator Clinton, and the paper's publisher, Mark Segal, has said, "The Clinton campaign takes the GLBT community very seriously... At this point, [the gay vote] is Hillary's to lose." Queerty notes that the same paper put up a bit of a stink over the fact that Barack refused to sit down with them, and has only met with the gay press once since beginning his run for President. But not to be outdone in gay-demographic diplomacy, Barack was the first major candidate ever to spend ad dollars in local gay newspapers, prior to the Texas and Ohio primaries, with full-page ads that made reference to the Stonewall Riots. We also note this little video currently playing on the Obama website which features a cute, argyle-sweater-clad teacher from the Bronx High School of Performance and Stagecraft discussing issues of race in the classroom, and students' reactions to Barack's speech on race.
