Artist Harry Bush Lives On In Shaved Down Times

MM-HarryBushTH.jpgWhere did you see your first copy of Bob Mizer's Physique Pictorial magazine? We're betting that it wasn't under your father's bed, unless you're former Stroke editor Christopher Harrity, or Suri Cruise. In the most recent issue of Unzipped, Harrity and homoerotic art collector Robert Mainardi discuss erotic artist Harry Bush (real name! true story!)—a tanned California counterpart to the cold and remote Tom of Finland. Not much leather here as a result, but plenty of blond boys.

Harry Bush was more than just a sun-kissed version of the more famous Finnish fetish artist, though. According to the piece by Sean Carnage in the May issue of Unzipped, he was also a grumpy old man who was more concerned with the stock of paper that his masterpieces were printed on than getting a piece of meat from 80s porn pup Lance. Rather than form a foundation like the Tom of Finland company, that would preserve his legacy, he was prone to foul moods in which he'd throw out most his drawings in fits of disappointment.

Hard Boys, the new collection of Bush's work (some previously published in magazines like Stroke, Drummer and naturalist magazines like Mr. Sun), may make Bush's drawings come alive for a new generation of porn lovers who may realize, like generations before them, that fantasies are often better than reality.
