ABC News conducted a little social experiment for 20/20 which aired on Friday in which they had two sets of actors, one a gay couple and one a lesbian couple, sitting on park benches and kissing in broad daylight. They tried this in two locations: Birmingham, Alabama and Verona, New Jersey. Guess what they found? While straight men tended to not mind seeing the pretty lesbos getting it on (shock!), many folks found the boys kissing to be distasteful, especially in the South.
In Alabama a woman called 911 on the boys, and eventually a police officer showed up to talk to them about their public affections. As shown in ABC's footage, though, he was clearly called off at the last minute by city officials trying to avoid a PR nightmare with a national news show basically trying to make their whole city look like a bunch of conservative bigots (which they probably largely are, but we digress).
In New Jersey, you find a more mixed reaction to the hot model-y boys making out, with one lady saying she'd love for them to move in next to her, for "eye candy." But still, ABC has re-stated the obvious, which is that America, fed a steady diet of pseudo-lesbian porn, is way more ready for lesbians sucking face, and the sight of two men getting cozy in public may still (shocks!) get them beat up or harassed-but maybe the sight of it isn't quite as shocking as it would have been twenty years ago, live and let live, blah blah.
The takeaway we didn't need: We will have to stick to making out on the streets of San Francisco if we don't want dirty looks.
