Variety.com is reporting that actress and action heroine Sigourney Weaver, famous for her creepy stares that make her generally fulfill the roles Christopher Walken might attempt if he had ovaries, has signed on to play the main character in a new Lifetime TV movie about a devout Christian who changes her views on homosexuality after her gay son kills himself. In "Prayers for Bobby", Weaver will star as "Mary Griffith, a devout Christian who winds up becoming an advocate for gay and lesbian youths after her son is driven into a deep depression by his family's disapproval and attempts to 'cure' him of his sexual orientation". Based on the 1995 Leroy Aarons book based upon a true story, the movie will undoubtedly be hilarious for several unintentional reasons, namely because it's a Lifetime movie and it's about spooky Christians and gay suicide.
Call us insensitive, but we didn't even know there were still such things as Lifetime TV movies, until we turned on the tube last night and saw A Kidnapping In The Family, about Marlo Thomas Kate Jackson coaching her grandson into making claims of Wiccan abuse against his slutty mother, played with white trash finesse by Traci Gold (also hysterically funny and bad, also based on a true story). Oh wait, that one was from 1996! So yeah, what gives?
The movie of the week, a clear hotbed of political controversy (if it were 1994), in all of its soft-focus misery, will debut later this year so keep your eyes on the TV guide.
