Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Charles Wuorinen has been commissioned by the New York City Opera to write a new work based on Annie Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain," which, uh, was made into this movie a couple years ago? You might have seen it? Yeah, anyway, the 25-year-long gay-mance will be dramatized in song, but for those of you hoping for some melodious romp where Jack and Ennis clasp hands and serenade each other in joyful tandem, think again. Wuorinen (who we're guess is a 'mo since this project was his idea) has been called the "last major unrepentant modernist," and for those not into the classical music scene, that translates as "the music will sound like dying cows and nails on chalkboards."
If you're a die-hard opera queen, however, Brokeback Mountain the Opera may be right up your valley, so to speak.
