Chinese Gov't to Rid Country of AIDS Activists, Etc, Just In Time For Olympics Oh, those silly Chinese. The Beijing Olympics are a few weeks away, and muckrakers, gays and other 'undesirables' in China have faced persecution in recent months, all likely stemming from an effort by Chinese authorities to put on a good face for the world. AIDS activist Wan Yanhai has been repeatedly followed by police and plans to leave the country in August. Dechen Pemba, an Tibetan with a British passport and a Chinese work visa was picked up by police outside her apartment, taken to the airport and put on a plane to London. And Lu Jun, a campaigner for the rights of Chinese people with Hepatitis B, has seen his website taken down and was detained by authorities when he arrived back in the country after attending a Hep B conference in Los Angeles. As we noted previously, there was also an apparent crackdown on gay clubs and cruising areas in recent months, and Beijing gay nightclub Destination (highlighted in a series by GayBC News) has posted a special bulletin on their website warning about how they will control crowds when they reach capacity. (One excuse used by authorities for raiding the club in March had to do with an over-capacity crowd.) Oh, and ha! Did we mention they're also removing dog meat from all restaurant menus in Beijing and the telling dog meat loving locals to kindly order something else while the tourists are in town?
