Falcon’s Classic ‘The Other Side of Aspen’ Gets a Gorgeous Hi-Def Restoration

Falcon Studios’ legendary 1979 ski-themed classic, The Other Side of Aspen, has just gotten a stunning new digital restoration at the hands of porn preservers Vinegar Syndrome and Gay Porn Blog’s Michael Stabile.

As Stabile puts it, “For anyone who thinks saving vintage porn isn’t worth saving, it’s because anyone who came of age with VHS or after HASN’T. ACTUALLY. SEEN. VINTAGE. PORN.”

This new print of the film was made in conjunction with Seed Money, the documentary Stabile has been working on about Falcon founder Chuck Holmes, and it contains the full version of a fisting scene that was cut from more recent DVD copies of the film after Falcon had to fend off an obscenity charge back in the 1990s. Yes, everyone, fisting was once way more taboo, and not even that long ago.

As you can see, gone are the yellow tones and blurriness we associate with vintage porn transferred to VHS or DVD, and back are bright, rich colors and bronzed flesh tones on the bodies of stars Al Parker, Casey Donovan, Chad Benson, Dick Fisk, Jeff Turk, and Mike Flynn.

Just look. The currently available DVD on the left, and the restored version on the right.

And look at Casey Donovan about to get creampied in the finale.

Apparently Falcon is now considering restoring more of their classics before the original prints completely degrade. To that I say yes please.

  1. Falcon has always screwed the pooch with their Vintage titles. Releasing and re-releasing titles in the cheapest possible versions while charging premium prices and giving a big FU to their customers.

    1. Funny you say that, every time I’ve had an issue with a title that I bought from them, they either replaced it, exchanged it, or offered me a refund. I wonder what you’re doing wrong when you call.

  2. It’s about fucking time. I argued for this when I was working for them 10 years ago. Prior straight ownership wasn’t interested in investing the time or money. I hope they do it with all their archives.

  3. Vinegar Syndrome is doing an important job giving old smut the Criterion treatment. They just released Wakefield Poole’s BIBLE!, too. Nice to know that someone is giving props to what was probably Falcon’s first smash feature … and it’s still strokeworthy after all these years. I mean, Dick Fisk … c’mon!
