 While our tranny sisters play a vital and visible role in the ongoing protests for marriage equality, we at The Sword recognize that their hard work is made harder by doing it in heels--and we shouldn't count on too many more weeks of participation from these gals because, frankly, they can't afford to keep buying new shoes.
Friday marked the Take Back the Polk march in San Francisco's Polk Gulch district, in which a bevy of fags and drag queens marched past a bunch of bars that once were dirty and gay and now are gentrified and fratty carrying signs that said "Pushy Girls Go Home" and "Take Polk Back." Despite the anti-Marina-girl message, the marchers were greeted warmly by all the drunk Marina girls they passed. Lead drag-tivist Anna Conda (pictured), who had injured a foot after the previous weekend's protest/party, was pushed in a wheelchair at the head of the pack.
Saturday was of course the National Day of Protest for Same-Sex Marriage Equality, and a rogue band of a 1,000 or so lesbigays took to the streets and caused a bunch of traffic back-ups from Market Street up through Chinatown and all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. For those who aren't familiar, this is a long walk, and the trannies in heels were quite tired -- though it must be noted that eager activist Pollo Del Mar was one of the last stragglers, taking the die-hards up Van Ness and on to Nevada for all we know. (Pollo was also spotted long after the previous week's Friday march to the Castro still marching up and down in broken heels around 7AM.)
