As you may or may not know, Rupaul got her start on the NYC club scene around the same time that Michael Alig and James St. James were at their party monster zenith, terrorizing the Limelight and Save the Robots with their makeup and kooky costumes.
Now, many music videos, a few albums, movies, and several TV shows later, Rupaul is a big drag superstar, Michael Alig's in prison, and James St. James is a lovable freak who cavorts around West Hollywood in muu-muus and occasionally shows up on Top Model. He also has a side project as a sort of batshit anchorwoman for World of Wonder's Freak TV.
These two interviews were shot recently by our pal Michael Lucid, during Ru/Andre's PR sweep for Rupaul's Drag Race (which we are, ZOMFG, in case you hadn't heard, really fucking excited about) which premieres on Logo on Monday.
In the first, Ru and James talk about their mentors and how they met back in the 80s. (Ed. note: Apologies, these clips a little longer than we usually like to post, but if you're a fan...)
In this second clip, Ru talks about the evolution of her style, from androgynous club maven to glamazon, and also about losing her mother the same day she performed at the 1993 March on Washington.
