Oh my stars, will we never get enough gay minstrelsy? The gay/celeb webs are abuzz! today with the news that Jack and Karen (Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally) are shooting a pilot for a long-awaited spinoff to the semi-groundbreaking 90s sitcom Will & Grace.
OMG OMG gurlz! Yes... we'll wait while you catch your breath.
The show's said to be called Karen & Jack, and the rollout date would not be til next fall. As it happens, career minstrel Sean Hayes was hoping to get pal and career musical theater hag Mullally to sign on as early as 2006, but Megan had high hopes for that talk show of hers that has since tanked. It's hard to know how the two actors will fit the project into their busy schedules, with Mullally last having that plum voice role in 2007's Bee Movie (that was sarcasm, folks), and Hayes landing that super awesome supporting role of Jack Nicholson's assistant in The Bucket List (that was too).
We've always enjoyed both Hayes and Mullally as performers--with Mullally, at her high points, channeling the best of Cloris Leachman's physical comedy skills and Hayes being, well, somewhere between Tim Conway and Paul Lynde, except less witty?--and we suppose the best we can hope for here is that NBC hooked them up with a decent writing team and not just the gang of hacks who wrote the shark-jumping seasons of W&G in which the show stopped relying on genuine humor and became a retarded revolving door of celebrity guest cameos, in the vein of late-era I Love Lucy. Best of luck to them in not being the new Joey.
FYI - According to TVGuide.com, Megan has signed on as a regular on a new series called THE MOTHERHOOD, for mid-season on ABC. Sounds incredibly boring. Nothing was mentioned about a JACK & KAREN spinoff.
