Marriott Hotels Getting Pressure From Fundies Remove Adult Movies From Pay Per View Offerings
Marriott Hotels Getting Pressure From Fundies Remove Adult Movies From Pay Per View Offerings

The American Family Association and other "pro-family leaders" are renewing pressure on Marriott International, Inc. to remove adult movies, both gay and straight, from the pay-per-view options provided to guests as in-room entertainment. Marriott has 3,000  properties in the US and elsewhere and they are likely being singled out by the cons and fundies (conservatives and fundamentalists) both because of their size and because of the company's Mormon family roots.

A Marriott spokesperson pointed out that the more violently Christian among their guests can easily have their adult options blocked, either by the front desk or by their own hand with the remote control.

The AFA is one of many fundie concerns that hate on gays, but the only one featured in the documentary Small Town Gay Bar because of their Tupelo, MI headquarters' proximity to one of the bars featured.

Porn studios make a considerable piece of their income from in-room pay-per-view sales at hospitality properties, mostly through interactive media provider LodgeNet, which itself has come under fire from the moral crusaders who launched this website, which is the second item that comes up, after the company's website, when you Google the company name. Launched by Citizens for Community Values, which is basically the Memphis version of the AFA, the Truth About Lodgenet website is dedicated "to protect[ing] men, women, children and families in communities throughout the United States from the documented negative effects linked to the distribution of hardcore, pornographic materials."  The website's example list of "graphic pornographic" movies on offer is curiously devoid of gay titles... we're guessing because they couldn't bring their Christian fingers to type those in. And realzies, we don't live to condescend like some of the gay blogs out there, but we can't help but chuckle at the awesome tagline they chose (clearly by committee): "Corrupt. Profit. Destroy lives." Ahh, ignunce.
