 Gay celebrities and sports figures were asked by the National Portrait Gallery in England each to choose six of their heroes, not specifying whether they be gay or straight, unknown or famous, porn models or non-porn models.
The show, called Gay Icons, was previously noted back in March for snubbing obvious choices like Liza, Judy and Barbra. Instead, the celebrity panel chose from their hearts, such as they are.
Elton John chose John Lennon, his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, Gianni Versace and few randoms. Bilie Jean King chose her wife and some members of her family (leave it to the dyke to be boring). Sir Ian McKellan chose Walt Whitman.
But the prize, in our book, for the most honest and awesome choices goes to Lord Waheed Alli, who picked Princess Diana, The Village People and a portrait of porn legend and weird, violent neighbor Jeff Stryker, naked in a tangle of white sheets. Alli said, "I wanted a porn star because for me you could not divorce sex from sexualilty."
Hear hear, Lord Alli! We couldn't have chosen better ourselves.
