This week, America embraced the joy and excitement around Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Americans feel hopeful, energized, and high on politics. Want to keep this post-DNC glow going strong into the weekend? Stream one of these six political TV shows, from thoughtful dramas to ridiculous comedy.
Mrs. America
This award-winning political miniseries is perfect for a weekend binge. Mrs. America follows the ups and downs around passing the Equal Rights Amendment, feminism in the 1970s, and the famous women who helped shape America politically. It’s incredibly acted and stunningly styled. I learned so much and didn’t want it to end. Stream this spectacular miniseries on Hulu.
The West Wing
Aaron Sorkin’s iconic political drama set inside The White House is unparalleled. Before Game of Thrones, this series held the record for the most Emmy Awards because it’s that good. I learned more about the inner workings of American politics watching The West Wing than I did in all of high school or college. Now available to stream on HBO Max.
The Newsroom
Sorkin followed up The West Wing with another political hit, The Newsroom. Fast-paced and thought-provoking, this show-within-a-show skewers the Bush years. It’s a very progressive show and a really smart one. It’s a shame, it only lasted three seasons. Binge the series now on Max.
Veep
A political comedy that hits too close to home right now, Veep follows the day-to-day life of America’s first female vice president. We watch Selina Meyer and her staff endure countless humiliations and disasters on her road to becoming the first female president. Laugh along with Veep on HBO Max.
The Good Fight
The spinoff of The Good Wife, this TV series stars gay favorite Christine Baranski as the most severe, stylish woman in law. The show gets super political in a way The Good Wife never really did. It goes after Donald Trump relentlessly. Feels very right for this election cycle. Stream The Good Fight on Paramount+.
Scandal
If a mindless but sexy political soap opera is your deal this weekend, revisit Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal. The show has all the drama Washington D.C. could handle. It also gives us our first gay vice president with the detestable Cyrus Beene. Stream Scandal from the start on Hulu.
I thought I was on a porn blog not a political blog…
I don’t watch political TV shows.
No one gives a shit
Especially left-wing shows. Boring. Liars they are.
