Broadway-turned-television star Andrew Rannells is opening up about his past life as a male stripper and what it’s like to film sex with his boyfriend. Well… kinda…
The star stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about a variety of topics. During the interview, the star revealed that he once played a faceless stripper during season five of Sex and the City and talked about the awkward realities of filming sex scenes with his real-life boyfriend, Tuc Watkins. Rannels and Watkins recently had to film some intimate scenes for Rannels’ Showtime show, Black Monday, where Watkins plays his partner.
“With Tuc, it was very easy to block it and get into it but then when it came time to actually filming it all of a sudden I had this realization that I was surrounded by the crew who have now become friends of mine,” said Rannels. “I thought, ‘I wonder if they’re thinking, ‘So that’s what it looks like. That’s what they do at home. That’s how they touch each other!” So then I got weirdly self-conscious in a different way. But all that said, it was much easier to do it with somebody that [you’re familiar with].”
Rannels then went on to talk about his very first on-camera role as a SATC stripper. He recalled showing up to set only to see that his costume was just a speedo, he had no lines, and his only direction was to “grind up against” another guy. The final cut of the episode doesn’t even show Rannels’ face. You just see his body from the shoulders down.
“It’s when Charlotte admits to Anthony that she’s having sex with her divorce lawyer,” said Rannels. “They’re in a gay bar and the scene starts with two male strippers in speedos and I was one of them, just like gyrating in a bar.”
We searched through some old episodes of SATC to find the specific scene Rannels mentioned and came across some hunky strippers in an episode entitled The Big Journey. He’s only visible for a couple of seconds, but we get a beautiful view of his body and a blurry outline of his junk.
