Anne Hathaway to Play Judy Garland

Judy may feel more than irrelevant to younger gays–and even to 40-something gays in love with Britney and Xtina–but the fact is she was the first modern gay icon who succumbed to the same sort of addiction and self-annihilation problems that both older and current generations of gay men suffer from, and she was a hilarious talk show host guest to boot.

Anne, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for Rachel Getting Married, will play Judy in both a stage play and a film being developed by The Weinstein Company, both based on the same biography by the writer who penned the Truman Capote bio that Capote was based on.

We look forward to watching Anne enter this new, scene-chewing stage in her career, and especially look forward to seeing how she handles “Swanee.”
