[UPDATED] Gay Sex: From The Blue Screen To The Big Screen

Everyone from the Sundance Film Festival is talking about the “explicit gay sex” in the new film, “Beach Rats”. Finally, the much-anticipated trailer is here.

“The eroticism of gay sexual awakening is in the front seat of storytelling,” writes the Daily Beast. “And with Beach Rats, which lives in a combination of seediness and beautiful teenage wonder, that storytelling is finally getting a little bit of nuance.”

We have been following the story of “Beach Rats” since early this year. It’s set open in limited release on August 25, 2017 and they have just released the official theatrical trailer:

“Frankie escapes the bleakness of his home life by causing trouble with his delinquent friends and flirting with older men online. When his chatting and webcamming intensify, he finally starts hooking up with guys at a nearby cruising beach while simultaneously entering into a cautious relationship with a young woman. As Frankie struggles to reconcile his competing desires, his decisions leave him hurtling towards irreparable consequences.
Will this be “as explicit” as the hype? Will this be the breakthrough that finally normalizes “mainstream male nudity”?

We’ll know in a month … watch this blog.

A little over two weeks when we ran the original post (see below) for “Beach Rats”, we had a lot of buzz to report. Positive buzz. Since then, not only did director Eliza Hittman win the Sundance Film Festival’s Directing Award for U.S. Drama, today the first official trailer has been released.

“Beach Rats” follows Frankie, a teen struggling to escape his home life in Brooklyn while coming to terms with sexual orientation. He splits his summer among his delinquent friend circle, a prospective girlfriend, and the older men he meets online using sexy selfies to make the connections.

I have a girlfriend who I’ve been with for a while,” he told The Daily Beast. ” I think when I read the character, his sexuality wasn’t really a question for me; it wasn’t a deciding factor. I’ve had friends who struggled with sexuality and are now out, in the open, and their parents know and everything, but I’ve seen it—I’ve seen my friends go through it.”

Distributor Neon has acquired North American rights to “Beach Rats” according to Deadline. We’ll have a chance to judge for ourselves when “Beach Rats” comes to theaters this fall.

“Beach Rats” from filmmaker Eliza Hittman is set in Coney Island and tells Frankie’s story. Frankie is a teenager who uses a selfie to snare sexual conquests on gay hookup sites. Frankie is played by the stunning Harris Dickman who as the Daily Beast describes, turns in “one of the most grueling, sensual, and captivating star turns at Sundance.”

Those are some big words to live up and a big promise yet to be delivered. The official trailer hasn’t been released yet. We’ll post it when it does. Of course, when it comes to gay sex and indie films, that’s nothing new here at The Sword.

NakedSword Film Works (NSFW) officially debuted almost a year ago as a platform designed to showcase independent film directors with an eye toward the provocative, the experimental, and the explicit. While those can be powerful buzzwords on the big or blue screen, the common threads for the films selected for NSFW is that sex scenes are not for shock value. Rather, they are integral in a telling a story that would not be complete without them.

There was “ALFA”, a hardcore, dramatic look at the lives and lust in gay life in Cuba

And the most explicit of them all, “Nova Dubai”

Will “Beach Rats” really as explicit as they say and hold it’s own against what we have already seen? Watch this blog.

  1. Hugo & Theo probably have them beat when it comes to explicit gay sex scenes, but France typically has Hollywood beat when it comes to films that are sensual and thought provoking.

    1. If by thought provoking you mean:

      Matheo: I’m straight.
      Louis: I have a wife.
Matheo: But what are we going to do with this bowl of pudding?
Louis: …We can both stick our dicks in it.

      Audience: What does it mean???
