Colt’s John Rutherford On Bankruptcy

The Sword reached out to Colt Studio’s President John Rutherford for comment on yesterday’s news that, following a bankruptcy hearing, his company had been handed over to its former owner, Jim French.

His response? No comment.

“I would prefer to take the high road, and not conduct our business in the trade papers and blogs. There has been far too much written about it already. If I have learned anything in my 21 years in this business, it is that nothing is ever quite as it seems,” Rutherford wrote.

On the one hand, what part of the potential demise of one of the industry’s most iconic studios shouldn’t be written about in the trade papers and blogs? On the other hand, I can understand the reluctance to engage in a he said/he said following the sleazy efforts by rival studio(s) to damage Colt and Rutherford’s reputation via anonymous e-mails and “leaks” sent to this site and various internet trolls.

Speaking of he said/he said, here’s what French told XBiz:

“I am very pleased with a decision turning over the COLT brand and assets back into my control. I’ve spent the past several years fighting to get what I was rightfully owed, and in the end I have prevailed.”

If by “prevailed” he means reaquiring a company that’s buried in debt to the IRS and creditors, well, good luck.

  1. Not to mention what a gentleman he is. I have been a fan of his work since his Flashpoint days and every article that I have read about him or interviews has been gracious and kind toward his models, coworkers and peers. It has not been easy in this current economy for any business, so stop the madness and get to work folks!

  2. Oh God mud slinging bitches! I think Rutherford rocks! Hes a director who has directed more consistently than any other alongside the best, Steven Scarborough, Kristian Bjorn Cadinot and William Higgins. Let the dust settle where it will and hell be just fine directing when, who and wherever he wants!

  3. i love you john rutherford!
hey french you happy now! boooooooooo! what are you going to with the company arent you like 80
