Exclusive: Republican State Senator Takes Gay Porn Star Out For Steak Dinner

State Senator Paul Koering is best known for being Minnesota’s first gay Republican to hold elected office. Despite being gay, his platform (anti-abortion, pro-guns) is unremarkable for a conservative. So what was the 45-year-old senator thinking when he took 20-year-old gay porn star Brandon Wilde on a date last Sunday?

Wilde, a twink known for the distinctive tiger paw tattoos on his chest, splits his time between Brainerd, Minnesota and West Hollywood, California, and has appeared in several hardcore gay sex scenes for sites like My Brother’s Hot Friend [link NSFW] and Cruiser Boys [link NSFW]. The young performer was also promoting escort services on Rentboy.com [link NSFW], but has since taken his profile down.

Wilde first tweeted about his night with Koering on Sunday evening, writing, “lol so funny!! in 45 mins im going 2 dinner with the senator :).” The senator, Koering, picked Wilde up and took him to Iven’s on the Bay restaurant in Brainerd, where they dined on strip steak and beef medallions.

In an exclusive interview with The Sword this morning,  Koering was unapologetic: “I don’t see anything wrong with going out with him. Do I think that being a porn star is the best thing? No. But that’s his choice. I think he’s a nice guy.”

The Sword spoke to Wilde, too, who revealed that his date with Koering was casual, yet awkward:

“I think he wanted to get in my pants, truthfully. And he was pretty flirty. But it was just dinner. We both were checking out the waiter though. It was fun.”

While Wilde has worked as an escort in the past, he insisted that Koering did not pay him for his time; he only paid for dinner.

Wilde stated that Koering added him on Facebook last year (“We probably had mutual friends or something, since I’m from Minnesota,” he explained), and the two had been online friends only–until this past weekend when they met in person at a gay pride picnic in Brainerd.

“He knew the girl that ran the thing, and she’s my mom’s best friend, so he met my mom and me there, and that’s when he asked me to dinner.”

Koering came out in 2005 after breaking with his party to reject a state constitutional amendment that would’ve defined marriage as between one man and one woman. While he supports Minnesota’s Defense of Marriage Act (which already banned gay marriage back in 1997), Koering has said that a constitutional amendment “takes things too far.” After coming out, Koering stayed true to his conservative ideals and won his re-election bid in 2006—in a right-leaning district—by 12 points. He’s up for re-election again this November, but first he’ll face a primary election in August against another Republican.

At dinner, Koering revealed some of his future political goals to Wilde.

“He told me he wants to be President one day!” Wilde told The Sword. “But first, he needs to win his re-election. He said once he was re-elected he’d work on gay rights issues and NOH8 stuff, you know? He said he’d make it so gay marriage was legal in Minnesota.”

That all sounds fine, except for the fact that it conflicts with Koering’s 2009 vote against a gay marriage bill. Following that vote, Koering’s office released a statement calling gay marriage “pointless,” but the things you tell your constituents and the things you tell your gay porn star dinner dates aren’t always the same, of course.

For his part, Koering has denied telling Wilde that he’d work on gay issues if re-elected. “I don’t remember telling him any of that,” Koering said. “I don’t support gay marriage. My job is to support my constituents, and that’s not something they want.”

Koering did confirm that he and Wilde discussed Wilde’s porn career over dinner, and while he doesn’t approve of his line of work, Koering would still like a second date. “I did ask him if he wanted to go to dinner again.”

Wilde sensed Koering’s disapproval. “He asked me at dinner why I was doing porn, like he was disappointed. He gave me this look like he thought I was better than all of that. But he asked me to dinner again next week.”

Good luck in your primary, Senator.

  1. To start off, I would like to say that I’m not trying to burn any of these two.
It’s a nice thought that the governor took Brandon out to eat and everything, but it’s a little bit akward.
It means that the governor watches his porn.

  2. This is a dog bites man story. An overweight and balding 45 year old successful man takes a beautiful 20 year old out on a date. DAH !

  3. This gay republican is single and probably watches porn himself. And he’s showing phony disapproval of the porn star’s life? God I hate fakers and liars and hypocrites!

Oh and since when does wanting equal rights make you a “flaming liberal”?

  4. He can date who he wants, and who made the rule that if you are a gay man if have to be a flaming liberal? Geez that pisses me off.

  5. So what was the 45-year-old senator thinking when he took 20-year-old gay porn star Brandon Wilde on a date last Sunday?

He thought he was going to get a piece of ass.

  6. Welcome Zach- have I already found you ? ! YEAH!
Mr. Koering sure seems to change his mind a lot. Mr. Wilde should take note!

  7. It takes a lot of self loathing to be a gay Republican. The party works against you (marriage, DADT), outspoken individuals deplore you, and closeted Republicans really fear and despise you. Sure it’s not a traditional scandal when a gay Republican goes out with a porn pony, but I doubt it would be highly beneficial to one’s profession if a straight Republican went out with a porn star.

Nice to hear that Brandon hangs out with his mom and tweets about his political meat mates.

    1. Just a reminder that it was BILL CLINTON who signed DADT and that Barack Obama himself has said publicly on many occasions that he is against gay marriage. Please know your politics and history before painting a group with such a wide brush. You don’t like it when they do it to us, so don’t do it to them. As an openly out gay Republican, of which there are many, I can say that your premises about us are completely wrong.

      1. Clinton was forced to sign off on DADT as a compromise as the Republican Party, which then controlled Congress, wanted to ban gays from serving in the military altogether. This was the compromise that he was forced into. Yes, Obama may be against Gay Marriage, but the Republican Party is against Gay People (any rights whatsoever.) To have gay politician be against gay marriage and gay rights because of his ‘constituents’ that’s just the lamest of the lame Uncle Tom behavior.

        1. I agree with the congressman Gay marriage is pointless. Is that the driving issue we have to worry about? How about human rights, like job discrimination and other basic civil liberties. Gay marriage only makes some of are legal proceedings easier. It does little else for the advancement of gay rights, yet the sheepeople are pushed into the believe it is the end all be all of gay rights so democrats can use it for their purposes not ours. Wake up and relieve the political class is screwing us and not even leaving flowers. At least the replications are upfront about it.

          1. It is true that Gay marriage may be pointless to some but I am sure it is quite different to those who want that “spiritual” connection. The main problem I have with it is that the government should not be discriminating this is more of a religious issue than a political. It should not matter to the government what the private individual does, and why must the Church let the government regulate such things when they CAN deny to perform a ceremony if they find that it conflicts with their belief. The largest concern is that they are wanting us, as gay men, to have less rights than the heterosexuals, that is a concern. What most find in marriage is no different for straight people than it is for gay people, they want to show their friends, family, and community that they are in love and want to show that to everyone, to live together knowing that their partner will be protected if the unexpected happens.

          2. Gay people can get jobs just fine. If your educated and don’t talk about your sex life there’s no disadvantage. You don’t have to tell your boss your gay and he has no reason to care, it doesin’t affect your work. Being poor, criminal, uneducated, unable too work long hours or unable to do certain jobs that’s where discrimination comes from.

  8. It is hopelessly sweet. The senator is suffering from the same affliction that haunted Emperor Hadrian. The older man lusting after a younger, buff vision that he can no longer attract. I hope Brandon will be kind, slow to judge and accepting of his admirer. Ah, how fast he will discover that time will speed past.

  9. corrective_unconscious

“It’s not a scandal when the Senator is openly gay.” Yeah, then it’s stark raving mad.

  10. Fuck, anyone else notice Trevor Knight looks like ET the Extraterrestrial? Aside from a decently big dick, what’s the point?
