Exclusive: We’re Talking With Stephan Ferris (aka Blue Bailey) About ‘Blue Movie’

We’ve talked about Stephan Ferris – the performer-turned-lawyer who you may know by the stage name Blue Bailey – on this blog many times before, but did you know that this industry favorite is the proud author of a new book? Currently preparing for its third printing, Blue Movie is a memoir that chronicles over 75 scenes from Ferris’ life that includes everything from a “sadistic Nazi” to a dungeon death, an arrest, and much, much more. Now, we’re sitting down and chatting with Ferris about the new book that he describes as “a very detailed account of gay sex and in particular, chemsex.”

“I think it’s important to shed light on why chemsex is so appealing to our community and how it can quickly become dangerous,” Ferris tells The Sword. “Since my book was first published, I have had several friends die from overdose, fentanyl poisoning, and other substance-related causes. Chemsex is killing our community and in most cases, it can be avoided. My goal with the book isn’t to tell people not to do drugs, but instead to show there are ways to use drugs safer, including harm reduction and other forms of recovery.

“I don’t pull any punches and that’s intentional. There are many moments in my life where a fun night out ended in death and handcuffs due to substance use. No one likes being told what to do, but it is important to have visibility and an understanding of why chemsex is so attractive to queer people.”

For Ferris, who is now a lawyer and the face behind The Law Office of Stephan F. Ferris in San Francisco, another reason for writing this book involved wanting to end the stigma around those who work in a professional field that still embrace being a “sexual outlaw” outside the office.

“I can be open about my sexuality, I can take loads all night at Horse Market, and none of that impacts my ability to be a professional, whether that be a doctor, an attorney, or something else,” said Ferris.

Ferris also tells us that even though this book does deal with topics like his history with chemsex and other possibly sensitive subjects, the writing of Blue Movie “was a form of therapy” for him.

“My pattern of use was to binge crystal meth for days, crash, catch up on life, and repeat,” said Ferris. “I didn’t really have time to be present in life or to be aware of the emotions that were underscoring my actions. Sitting down and writing allowed me the space and perspective to go back and analyze moments in my past that I moved too quickly to process.

“My publisher gave me some great advice. Write everything down! You can always remove it later in the editing process. It’s important to get everything out of your head and onto the paper at first. With that in mind, I didn’t think anything was too difficult to write about, but there are some passages, in particular some passages about slamming, that I prefer not to re-read or re-relive.”

If you want to read more from Ferris and get into these detailed stories that are featured in Blue Movie, copies from the second printing of his memoir are now available for purchase. As for the best place to get the book, Ferris encourages fans to buy or order the book from their local LGBTQ+ bookstore. If you don’t have easy access to a queer bookstore though, Blue Movie can be ordered through the Unbound Edition Press website or via Amazon – a place where Ferris asks fans to rate and review Blue Movie to help it get noticed by the site’s algorithm.

You can also catch Ferris on the road as he promotes his book. In addition to a March 12 stop at The Eagle NYC, you can see Blue Movie at Fist Fest in Augusta, Spring Blooms in Dallas, and with Leather Daddy Skin Co. at IML in Chicago. To keep up to date on all these visits and more, be sure to follow Stephan Ferris on Twitter, Instagram, and on his podcast’s YouTube channel.

So far, I’ve only read “Blue Movie” twice. It’s compelling. I like the ‘staccato’ scenes, quick and easy. The situations, the thoughts of addictive behaviors expressed by Blue,
being able to be in the mind of the author, the actual drug and sex acts to which he’s driven are all parts of what put me right into the story as if I was with him, watching him go through the battles. And yet, I wonder, what the hell happens to people which causes such despair and the fight to get out of that spiral or just give up. I am so proud of the fact that Stephan was able to attain his goal of becoming an attorney and his support for beating down the stigma attached to HIV, sex, choices, and humiliations. It’s good to know he’s actively doing this working through groups, podcasts, interviews, etc to bring some enlightenment to society. It appears he’s had a family and partner who supported him as well as they could and didn’t give up on him when relapses reoccured. I first became aware of Stephan and Blue when placing among the top contestants at IML as Mr Friendly SF rep. Since then, I’ve watched many, many video clips of Blue Bailey and fell in lust with him. I’m a “Friendly” fan and was near the center of the movement right after it began with Dave Watt in Kalamazoo, Michigan. From Stephan’s unhappy beginnings through his ordeals to the awesome progress he’s made is truly remarkable.

After I posted my comments, I re-read what I wrote and now apologize for my “rambling” story. I am HIV positive and felt the sting of stigma many times and the resulting self-doubt and hate so I related to some scenes where the author gave us a look into his thoughts. I can say I have a lot of respect for Stephan and wish him much success.

  2. I think he’s both brave and inspiring writing this book. There’ll be judgemental people who say nasty stuff about him. But he is showing others you can come out of add8ction and be sucessful. Plus he’said very humble we and still sexy as ever.

  3. He has always been one of my favorite porn actors. I got a thrill meeting him, ever so briefly, when he was here in Fort Lauderdale a few weeks ago on tour promoting his book. Even hotter in person and surprisingly nice, even somewhat shy (that surprised me a lot).

  4. Blue Bailey is one of the best porn actors EVER. It’s because he doesn’t “act” He performs with passion… and is believable, and fucking sexy. He’s obviously smart, hence his future path. And… he’s a natural… natural body, not destroyed with awful tat’s, etc He’s one of the only porn actors that I can truly respect. The industry needs more like him. Bravo. Hats off to Blue.

  5. Although he was never my type (I’m old and hairy, looking for similar) I mostly enjoyed watching Blue’s work. Appreciated the genuine appearing enthusiasm he showed when getting fucked. Having strong fantasies of walking into his lawyer office, tearing his 3 piece suit off, and fucking him on his desk!

  6. I’ve always respected Blue Bailey… fun porn start, seems to own his history, plus, also did the hard work to move on with his life. I do hope he continues to produce content when he has time. I find him very sexy :)
