Canadian football player Christion Jones has been released from the Edmonton Eskimos after a series of homophobic tweets. The former Alabama receiver/kick returner tweeted out earlier this weekend that “man ain’t suppose to be with a man.”
“Ima keep it this real….” said Jones in a now-deleted tweet. “Man ain’t suppose to be with a man. A women is not suppose to be with another women. THATS ME THO! Live life with safety.”
After being called out for his views, Jones double-downed on his opinion in a flood of tweets that shamed his critics for attacking him for speaking his mind.
Jones later apologized for his tweets and admitted his views were wrong, but it was too late. Exactly eight minutes after he sent out his apology, the Edmonton Eskimos tweeted out that he had been released from their roster.
“We stand by the LGBTQ2+ community and firmly condemn the language used by Christion Jones,” read the team’s statement. “There is no place for such commentary on our team. Jones has been released from the roster.”
Twelve minutes after the Eskimos tweeted their statement, the Canadian Football League sent out two tweets declaring their love and support of the queer community.
“We in the CFL hold high the Diversity Is Strength banner. Our league makes no claim on perfection but it does strive to be inclusive, to accept and indeed celebrate our differences, and to respect and honour human rights,” tweeted the League. “There is no place in our league for commentary that disparages people on the basis of their religion, race, gender or sexual orientation. As Pride Month continues, we stand with the LGBTQ+ community. We all need to say no to hate and yes to love.”
Jones has not tweeted since his apology or publicly commented on being cut from the Edmonton Eskimos.
Good. Bigotry has to be nipped in the bud wherever it raises it’s ugly head.
He’s entitled to his opinion , Period ! Get over it. We the gay community have our opinions straight people can have there’s.
He’s entitled to his opinion. He’s also entitled to the consequences of his public voiced opinion.
Props to the Eskimos for responding so promptly to distance themselves from this deranged self-righteous dickhead.
I find it fascinating that people like him invoke blatant hate speech but try to condemn it when it’s used against them. Just like that one loser who was against BLM because “they don’t show up for LGBTQ+ rallies.” The whole point in these movements is EQUALITY. You don’t get to pick and choose.
And it’s only made worse by the fact he seems to think he’s an actual Christian. What a moron
