Former GayVN Performer of the Year Logan McCree: “Looking Forward to Likes, Comments and Insults”

Hmmm…. this is a complicated situation. I say that because itʻs become increasingly easier to label people or to write people off in this digital age. In my humble opinion, I think that Logan is misguided. And he isn’t the only one. There are many of our gay/bisexual brothers and sisters out there who openly support Trump. Maybe it’s because they’ve been raised in Republican or Republican-like environments and that’s formed their view of the world.

Logan’s arguments are not without SOME merit. On the surface, before the Covid-19 scare, it probably would have seemed that the U.S. economy was doing really well. Unemployment figures were undeniably low. And as Trump would tout, those figures are equally true when you look at figures for people of color. The problem is assuming that these numbers are due to Trump’s actions. History shows that the actions of the previous administration is what set the unemployment numbers on its decline. Trump and his administration luckily have not done anything major to affect those numbers, so naturally, they would continue to decline. I guess you could “hand it” to Trump for not being a complete ahole in that regard. At least he didn’t “fk it up” in terms of unemployment.

As far as Logan’s claim about environmental restrictions goes, it would be interesting to see what Trump’s actions in terms of stripping away regulations has actually done. I don’t know if there are studies out there who have shown what damage his actions have caused. Maybe it’s too early to tell. Trump’s actions against the environment have been deplorable to be sure, but to a Republican, or to a person who supports big business, unless you have undeniable proof that Trump’s actions DIRECTLY affected anything, you won’t sway their judgment on those issues.

As far as feminism goes, personally, I am neutral on the subject. I agree that women are still struggling to be treated equally in the work environment. Women do deserve equal pay. They do deserve to be respected equally. Their bodies should be respected, as well as their choices. We also live in a time where women are also seen at times proclaiming their superiority to men. Who hasn’t seen a show or come across a woman who doesn’t think that they’re smarter than a guy. I don’t believe that they’re smarter. I believe that men and women think differently, and that each has its use in society. But I can see how the rhetoric of “Women are smart, Men are dumb” can be offensive to a lot of men.

Now the one area that concerns me is attitude of SOME gay/bisexual men against the larger LGBTQ+ community. Personally, I have a gay Republican friend who feels that he is “outside” of the community because he doesn’t want to be “labeled” as gay. I suppose he, like many gay Republicans, looks at the more exuberant, colorful portion of our society and wants to detach themselves from that. It’s really sad to see and I don’t understand it at all. But then again, that’s probably because these gay Republicans are not paying attention to our collective history. It is really because of the colorful, exuberant portion of our community that we are able to stand out in the open today. Without the patrons of Stonewall… without those unafraid to march in our Pride parades… without those who were willing to speak out during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic… without ALL of our brothers and sisters stepping out into the light to be seen and heard, WE would not be able to “come out of the closet,” as it were. So hey… if a school wants to provide a space for its own LGBTQ community to have a voice, then they should be able to do that. It’s not “pushing a gay agenda.” I don’t know about Mr. McCree, but I knew I was gay by the time I was 10 years old, and it would have been comforting to me if I had a safe space in my school system that I could have gone to at that age. But no, like most in our community at that time, we waited and hid till we were old enough to go to the bars… and when we finally got up the courage to do so, we had to creep around, and run into the bar when no one was looking because we were too afraid to be beaten on the streets. I think there is a way to “inform” our children that should not be seen as “pushing” an agenda. We live in a society where the “straight” agenda is constantly pushed. Where is the outrage by that?

In the end, I don’t hate or despise Logan or any of our other gay Republicans… I do, however, pray (“Yes, Annelle, I do pray!”) that someday they themselves will “see the light” and come to their senses and see the current Republican party for what it is. The party that stands against everything that a LGBTQ+ man or woman is.
