François Sagat Straddles the Line Between Porn Star and Celebrity While Straddling Gary Lee Boas

Manager of a porn store in Lancaster, PA, Gary published the cult book Starstruck, displaying his extensive collection of celebrity photographs taken throughout his lifetime, which launched him into mainstream red carpet photography. Also a professional beefcake photographer (his second book was the pricey New York Sex 1979-1985,) with a long-running stint at Mandate, Gary knows a star when he sees one and blurs the lines between pornography and pop culture. “I was this guy the stars would see year after year after year,” he told BUTT editor-in-chief Jop van Bennekom, “I was everywhere. I never gave up. Some stars have seen more of me over a year’s time than their own family. They come to trust your face. It becomes kind of familiar to them.” Citing Elizabeth Taylor as an example, he says “Now it’s ‘Hello Elizabeth’-‘Hi Gary.'”

When discussing his job of equally chronicling the nude bodies of some of the world’s hottest hunks, he muses “I absolutely love doing it. I love to meet people and you really meet people when they’re naked.”
