Gay Sean Cody Model Told To Dial Down The Gay

“Ryan,” who now goes by Devon Hunter, wrote a lengthy play-by-play of his two scenes with Sean Cody called “Know Before You Go,” and maybe after reading it you’d rather work in a Siberian labor camp?

After the dates were set and the plane tickets purchased I then spoke on the phone with my recruiter at Sean Cody. He gave me tips and expectations concerning my appearance, and then asked me questions about myself, so as to create my “character.” He wanted me to be bisexual; however, “I have been out since I was 15, and I have been dancing in gay clubs since 1998. No one is going to buy that. I am gay. Period.” Okay, well, they could work with that. At that time I thought I was going to remain in the thirty-something closet (since I was still, at that time, dancing under the declared age of 24). Then the recruiter asked me about my career, and we had this conversation (or something to this effect):

“What do you do?”

“I’m a professional dancer and choreographer, and I am also a career exotic dancer.”

“Oh, wow. You can’t say that. Sean wouldn’t like that. Don’t tell anyone here that.”

“Why?”

“It’s too gay.”

“Oh. Well, I write for a gay newspaper, and I have taught writing at the college level. I’m an educator, and I’ve studied languages. I guess it wouldn’t be a lie to say I’m a linguist.”

“Okay, perfect. We’ll use that. What sports do you do?”

“I don’t. I’m a dancer.”

“Well, make something up.”

“I don’t want to do that. I was a gymnast before I was a dancer.”

“Perfect. You’re a linguist and gymnast. Don’t bring up the other stuff.”

“Okay. So, you guys don’t like gay guys then?”

“No! No, it’s not that. It’s just that straight guys sell better.”

Ha. Straight-for-pay is the new gay-for-pay? It gets worse:

If I seem quiet, shy, and/or tentative in the videos on Sean Cody it is because of the direction I was given by the crew moments before filming:

“Okay, don’t talk with your hands; don’t use any big words; and keep your voice kinda deep.”

“So, you want me to speak as I am right now?”

“YES! The way you just said ‘right now’ was totally perfect.”

“Okay.”

“So you understand?”

“Oh, yes. I understand perfectly.”

[…]

There was the constant threat of not getting paid. “If you cum too fast everyone goes home with no money.” Great, I get it. How many times do you have to say that? [Scene partner] Fuller said, “Dude, if you fuck up my money we’re going to fight.” My gay eyebrow went up really fast. He stood down, and tried to go back into encouraging me. But it got worse every time Fuller would say, “Man, you are doing awesome!” or “Dude, think of the money.” I know he meant to help me, but everyone on the staff was getting shorter and curter with me as getting a hard-on got more difficult (and painful). I kept up fine for the first 4 hours, but going into hour 5 I started having severe issues from going numb. At hour 6 I doubted I could finish at all, and at hour 7 I was contemplating calling it all off and giving up completely. Fuller then said, “Dude, can we move this along? I wanna get to the bank before it closes.”

There’s more (and the promise of two more posts on the subject) on Devon’s site.

In defense of Sean Cody, shoots regularly take several hours (especially with straight models), so that’s not a problem. And, if you think the line about straight guys selling better than gay guys (and white guys selling better than black guys) is just a myth, consider all the money Sean Cody spends treating their models like kings. Straight, white kings.

I will give Sean Cody this much: They absolutely go all out on travel, lodging, food, and general pampering off set. When I had some incredible airport drama they were right there helping me get the flights I needed. I was to be chauffeured in a limousine, and when my flight got redirected from San Diego to Orange County they sent the limousine 100 miles north to pick me up and drive me comfortably back to San Diego. I stayed at a gorgeous resort hotel for both trips, and the food before and after the shoots was awesome. They really didn’t scrimp at all on making sure I was comfortable. I really have to applaud them for being so generous in this regard. They also pay amazingly well – far, far better than other houses.

  1. I think its pathetic how all these gayporn sites are self loathing and homophobic. We’re gay men, we want to see gay sex yet the idea getting that from “gay men” is considered unmarketable. I understand why these studios do it, but I just think its ridiculous. Sorry buddy you’re just too gay for our gay site. Gay for payers can KISS MY FUCKING ASS and any studio that refuses to show the true beauty and sexiness of hot gay men can lick my sweaty, unwashed and saggy balls.

  2. “young, cute straight or bisexual guys who look like an Abercrombie ad.”

I thought that niche was dominated by Corbin Fischer NOT Sean Cody. CF’s pictorials actually look like an A&F ad. SC’s? Not so sure.

  3. I have mixed feelings about Devon Hunter’s complaints. I don’t have a problem with SC’s “str8” fiction. To me, porn is about what gets a guy’s dick hard, and I don’t cast judgments. But I do think he made valid points about how SC treats its actors. SC has retaliated against him by publishing his real name, using the “Queer Click” site as the vehicle. I think that was especially sleazy. I hope current and future SC models will take note of that, and realize that their privacy means little or nothing to that studio.

  4. Sean Cody is a brand, a brand built on people who get off on young, cute straight or bisexual guys who look like an Abercrombie ad. There is enough porn out their for everyone’s preferences (twink, bear, gay, bi, straight, trans) They have been successful over the years because they stick to a formula. They have been criticized for only having one type of guy (lean white 20 something guys) but you don’t criticize a fetish site for only using certain models or actors. Let’s face it – porn is more acting every day. I’m sure Sean Cody is as scripted as reality television these days, but who cares? It’s FANTASY, which is what makes money in the industry. If you have to coach actors to maintain the brand integrity or fantasy of that brand to get work, so be it. Personally if a porn actor came in with a hot face/body and carries themselves like a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race, the appeal is lost for many who subscribe to that particular fantasy. Not that that person isnt attractive, sexy, important or doesnt have the right to act or be anything they want to be, it’s just they are losing the appeal of the demographic (AKA the people who PAY for it) . And if they arent comfortable with the job, then they should find work elsewhere. It’s that simple.

If I were casting a movie for the big screen, you want the closest match to that character. The same applies to the fantasy that is porn. Sean Cody is succeeding by adhering to the formula for their success. If you dont like their guys or their porn or their method for casting models, there is something else out there for you. Poor guy, you had to jack off for hours and get paid a nice sum of cash. Most of us do it all day and get nothing but a dirty towel in the end.

  5. I am really intrigued by this conversation and would love to contribute the best advice to all of the above comments; LEARN TO FUCKING SPELL!
Maybe then, gay men might be taken a little more seriously.

  6. I just have to say that i hate the label of I am straight or gay. I am a man who likes to be with other men. I am just my self what ever that is. I dont like the guys who say they are stright acting if you are acting then you need to look at your self and be your self not act. I like to be out doors have been in the milirary my other half is in the special forces we have been together for 18 years meet in the boy scouts of all things. He is over seas fighting a war has not been back for over 6 years because of his job but I dont get upset cause I love the man and he loves me. I dont know what you would label me but I dont want it unless its a loving man with my Husband that just wants to live his life and have the rights we have both faught for.

  7. Sean Cody is such a F**king moron, this straight man BS is why i find his stuff so hard to watch. There is nothing more akward than watching to people who have no sexual chemistry. his argument that gay men don’t act straight is stupid becuase their are plenty of manly gay men out there.I’m not supporting this A-hole anymore, and any person who believes gay-for pay is realistic is an even bigger moron.

  8. Wow, it only took about three comments for this article to change directions and become a cat fight.

I did a jerk-off scene for SC, and a lot of this article sounds about right. It was one of the most stressful things in my life. If you think about it, you’re watching porn for 2-3 hours, jerking off, and they don’t want you to cum, and the crew keeps on reiterating that if they miss the cumshot, the whole day is ruined, and you might be sent home penniless. I got to work with most of the camera crew, and some are better than others, but it was pretty much the same story. It was my one and only time doing porn, so I thought that is how porn is done.

As for the straight/gay thing. I’m out and happily gay, and no one told me to hide who I was. Maybe Devon is just a little “obvious,” if you know what I mean. And there’s nothing wrong with that. A hot guy is a hot guy, even if a purse falls out of his mouth from time to time. Still, I would say a lot of us have the same reaction when we hear a guy’s voice, and he looks like Hugh Jackman but sounds like Mr. Slave. Its porn. There’s nothing real about it, so act it up.

  9. wow lol selfloathing mary, havent been called that b4. mayb u are the selfloathing mary ? yes/no , since i commented on the story while u decided to attac me instead. i think u need to have a long look in the mirror to c who is looking bak. because i feel sorry 4 u and the person u are.

  10. The homophobia in these comments is shocking. Throwing around words like nellie and mary as a means of emasculating is on the same level as the actions of SC. The fact is that we all harbor some amount of internalized homophobia. How could we not? Even if we think we live in a celebratory world or community we have all been exposed to a heterosexist society. All we have to do is read comments like those above mine see that no matter who you are or what your identity is (and how comfortable you are with it) there are others who feel you are “too ___” or “not ___ enough.” Is it not possible to let gay men exist in whatever manner they wish? Straight acting or not; queen or not, claiming a gay identity means a whole lot more than fucking other men. It’s this kind of in-fighting and political ‘ID’ struggle that allows the media to dictate what a gay man should be. Before you attack someone else’s identity, take a moment to consider where that desire comes from… and if you are truly comfortable with your own.

  11. The homophobia within gay porn is really disturbing. I thought we celebrated same sex desire, not shame it. ugh!

  12. Chris the only tosser around here is you, keep stamping those tiny little feet of yours while claiming you aren’t a queen. I read the article in question you self loathing Mary. Maybe your opinion will be taken more seriously if you didn’t write like a 12 year old GIRL.

The Mary doth protest too much.

    1. @Estelle:
Who are you to say someone is a queen or is self loathing when you don’t even know them. I agree with Chris. I like a manly male. It is rather counter intuitive to be into girly men(not knocking anyone for it). But what they did to Devon is a shame. I’ll never look at Seancody the same again

  13. i was spelling stright as str8 cos str8 was quicker to type, u tosser. and i was only pointing out that not all of us are queens since we luv to label everyone and everything. and ive never waxed my eyebrows or worn fake tan but u go ahead and label. mayb next time u can also read the article in question and comment on the topic instead of the smallest thing ever like how i spell a word to save time. id hate 4 u to look like an idiot a 2nd time U TOSSER

  14. Chris if you are spelling STRAIGHT STR8 then you are not straight acting. Only fags spell it that way. Self loathing queens love straight men. BTW most men who call themselves straight acting are delusional. A few tips, waxed brows, orange skin, and a roided up physique don’t make you straight looking.

  15. gays luv str8 guys because they act like men, and thats what we want men that act like men and not wannabee females. so thats why str8 sells better. frankly id perfer (forgive the label) str8 acting gay guys to watch. im str8 acting (to a point) and im not the only one so id watch gay over str8. cos if gay i can go yeah i could fuck him (not like that would happen) but id know slightest minimal chance it could happen were str8 no chance. so they shouldn’t have to hide . lol were putting ourselves back into the closet, not to hide from the world put so gay guys will buy ur prn.

  16. I think it’s anyone’s right, straight or gay, to do whatever they want with their own body. If a straight man wants to do gay porn, more power to him. It’s his right. What I am appalled at is the gay communities continual use of “straight acting” and our constant fascination with machismo. When we put down our gay brothers and sisters for acting, well, gay, we’re putting down ourselves. We all woke up sucking cock this morning. Just because one chooses not to wear pink hot pants doesn’t make him any less gay, it just makes him less visual. When gay men stop this Uncle Tom form of self hate, sites like Sean Cody will stop lying about the orientation of their models.

  17. We all know SC lies about majority of their boys. Like someone said before, where do they recruit these guys? AT A GAY BAR. I can’t be upset about the “straight” selling better than gay because it’s true, just look how thirsty gay men are for straight men. They don’t celebrate or uplift their own from Out to Advocate. They are still mentally screwed by the vast perception that straight is far more superior than gay. And to any straight men doing gay porn, you are a fucking disgrace. I hope you feel mighty mighty low when you rest your head at night. I never wish you well, even though it’s your personal choice – fuck you.

  18. Yeah its pathetic, but the worst site seems to be Englishlads. They seem to only have ‘straight’ guys these days, you know, straight guys that like to fuck each other, go to gay clubs and pick up men, have boyfriends openly etc.. Drop it, not everyone likes the idea of fucking straight men. To me the idea that the cock has been anywhere near a cunt is a turn off.
