Here’s What Colby Keller Thinks About Art

Unzipped may not be down with Manhunt Daily’s “So can I come on your face, Colby?” interviewing strategy, but I found it an amusing read. The full interview is at Manhunt Daily; an excerpt is below.

Colby Keller is a scarf-wearing museum fag in a he-man fuck stud body. Outside of pontificating, his talents include 50-50 versatility and a huge dick. His blog at Big Shoe Diaries is a must read for any fan of hardcore trailers, dildo snow angels and fan art contests (results come back today!).

Manhunt Daily:One of our readers would like to know why you’re often cast as a bottom…

CK: I believe a lot of the porn work I do comes down to ability and professionalism. I’m one-hundred percent versatile, and for the most part, the bottom role is more challenging once you add cameras, lights, crew and action. I’ve never had a bad professional experience and I think that translates to directors knowing they can work with me in whatever capacity they need in order to make a film work…

MD: Let’s say that there’s a gay armageddon of sorts. All men will be divided into strict titles of top or bottom, and there’s no in-between. Which side would you prefer to be on?

CK: If there’s a “gay armageddon” I would probably be cast into the Outer Darkness of heterosexuality, because I would refuse to submit to such a ridiculous Messianic order. I’d then be searching for a butch lesbian in the same situation who would hopefully strap it on for me from time to time.

MD: What do you see as the dividing line between erotic and pornographic? Could gay porn ever be considered art?

CK: Well, the line between art and porn (as well as art and any number of other categories, such as pop-culture) is a fine one. There are your classic examples that bridge the gap: Warhol, Mapplethorpe, Paul Cadmus, Jeff Koons (who was married to a famous Italian pornstar), Nan Goldin, Thomas Ruff, Andreas Serrano (who has a great photo of a straight man getting fisted), Kara Walker (in a decidedly un-erotic way), all solidly accepted into the art cannon but with a body of work that often uses images of explicit sex. Then there are your more ambiguous examples: Tom of Finland (who received his own retrospective at MOMA), Jeff Burton (who creates behind the scenes art-photos from porno sets) and people like Slava Mogutin or even Terence Koh (a great performance artist whose work often embraces explicitly sexual themes. Check out his amazing site, one of my favorites). There is also my good friend and photographer Matthias Herrmann. He used to head the Vienna Secession and has a beautiful body of work about his own beautiful (and fraught) body. We’ve been pen-pals since before I even started doing porn. Check out his website too.

MD: Let’s say that you’ve been given the opportunity to direct and star in your own fantasy porno. There is an unlimited budget, and anyone (porn star or not) can appear in it. Please describe it in detail, including performers, setting and action that would be taking place.

CK: Geez! I could write out a whole script if you’d like. I think I’d make a big-budget Sci-fi epic action adventure porno… with a cast of thousands! Spaceships, anti-gravity, alien monsters with a five foot penises that cum buckets, all in stunning 3-D… the possibilities are endless.  And just think of the all the franchising possibilities!

MD: You have the choice of working with two different models, and you can’t work with both of them. One of them is a monumentally hot gay-for-pay model. His fucking style can best be described as “mechanical”. The other is a fully gay man who’s extremely passionate, but not quite attractive. Which one do you choose?

CK: Porn is a business, and knowing what I know about business, there would probably be another factor invovled… and that’s pay. “Hotter” models are paid more for their work; it’s just a fact of the business. So, the gay-for-pay model scene would probably pay more and influence my decision. But if that was somehow not a factor, the gay model for sure. There’s nothing easier on a set than knowing you’re sexually desired by the other person.

MD: Let’s talk about Manhunt for a second. You say you have two profiles–one for home and one for traveling. What’s the hottest experience you’ve had via Manhunt?

I’m sure everyone has the experience that Manhunt works well for them in some cities and not in others. My aesthetic translates best in NYC. When I visit Los Angeles, I’m all but ignored, but the moment I hit the Big Apple, my profile blows up with messages. Probably the hottest experience would have been when I was staying at this really cool hotel in the West Village. I had been up there for a scene and afterwards my Cialis was still going strong. The room was tiny, but had a whole wall of mirrors next to the bed. I logged on and within five minutes a hot boy nearby was at my door. And after that I logged on again… another hot boy. And then I logged in again… another hot boy. So I thought, well, maybe one more time… another hot boy.  It was my special Manhunt mojo day!

MD: Do you have any thoughts on bareback porn? What’s your personal policy on unprotected sex?

CK: I have always felt most comfortable working with companies that go to great lengths to ensure the health and safety of their models. That said, I can admit to the occasional guilty indulgence in bareback porn. I feel very conflicted about it. I like natural bodies, natural sex and love cum, but also don’t want to see any fellow sex workers put their health at risk for a momentary orgasm. I try to apply the same kind of nuance to my own personal sex life. It’s a calculated risk that I try to avoid, but do fantasize about on occasion. I test myself regularly–every three months–and keep my sexual partners aware of my sexual history. I can only be responsible for my own actions towards others. I hope that my partners would treat me with the same respect I try to offer them.

MD: What’s the most underrated sexual activity?

CK: Hmm, definitely spanking. And licking armpits.

MD: Would this interview have been awesome or awkward if it had ended with my cum on your face?

CK: Cum always makes any experience for me better. D’oh! I think I just felt something hit my eye… tastes like 1111’s and 0000’s. Virtual cumshot? Hot!  Thanks, Dewitt!
