[UPDATED] GAYvn & Sean Zevran Weigh In On Hugh Hunter’s Racism Stand

“I am calling on all members of the gay entertainment industry — to stand up against the systemic racism and bigotry in this industry.”

Sexual predation is having “a moment” in America and Hugh Hunter thinks it’s long past time the entire gay porn industry has a moment about race an bigotry.

And he’s right.

Now, GAYvn has something to say. Something very welcome:

“CHATSWORTH, Calif.—In response to concerns raised by members of the adult community, AVN Media Network is making a significant change to the 2018 GayVN Awards nominations. Effective immediately, the category of Best Ethnic Scene has been merged with Best Duo Scene. All nominees in both categories will be in the running for a single award.”

They have more to say in the complete article in AVN.

Sean Zevran has weighed in as well:

And back to the original post:

This was triggered by the recently announced GAYvn nominations. Hugh has declined to accept the three nominations he received because one of the GAYvn categories is for “Best Ethnic Scene” which segregates all “black, Latin, and Asian” performers to a category of their own rather than having them included in standard categories like “Best Actor” or “Best Sex Scene.”

Hugh has a point. And a big one. However, his specific targeting might be a bit too narrow to affect the change that’s really needed. Gay porn awards are largely insider baseball where the nominated studios and performers vie for bragging rights and coverage in the gay blogosphere.

hugh hunter racism gay pornUnlike the Grabbys, XBiz Awards, and the CyberSocket Web Awards, the GAYvn’s have been in mothballs since 2011, resurrected for the first time this year. GAYvn didn’t invent this category. But it’s time for it to disappear for good. Peter Fever deserves to be considered for “Best Gay Site” just as much as Sean Cody. And every performer who excels in any nominated category belongs in that category right along with his fellow nominees.

“Separate but equal” was used as an argument for granting us civil unions rather than the full rights of hetero-normative matrimony. SCOTUS Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg called this a “sort of skim-milk marriage” by comparison. This is the same thing. And while I agree with Hugh there’s a huge racist problem in the gay industry, gay porn awards are symptomatic of that, but far from the biggest culprit.

Racism goes beyond award show categories. It goes beyond the studios. Beyond the industry itself. It’s rampant in our entire community because it’s rampant in society at large. President Obama didn’t usher in a “post-racial” reality to America. And President Trump ushered in an era where the band-aid was pulled off the racist underbelly that had been in our country all along. It’s now out in the open. And not just in America.

But our bit of America here at The Sword is the gay community. And racism is not a new topic here either. While there have been increasing signs of diversity lately, we have a long, l-o-n-g way to go. We’ll know we are there when the color of a performer’s skin is just a detail. Not something to be nominated for.

You know how I feel. Now I want to hear from you. Are you on board with Hugh Hunter and the call for diversity?

  1. Yes, because we should look to an STD carrying/spreading cumdump like him. It’s obvious he’s just looking for attention and trying to be cool.

  2. This is a great article by The Sword, and kudos to GayVN for stepping up and listening to both the models and fans and taking a positive step forward on behalf of our industry. There is no reason PeterFever models shouldn’t be competing alongside SeanCody. Let’s look at the performances, the followings of the models, and what the models are doing for society rather than their skin color.

  3. The number of whiny conservative/regressive white gays in this thread is hilarious. Just because your Grindr profile says “white only” doesn’t mean that the rest of us have to adhere to your preferences.

We don’t have “white” and “colored” water fountains anymore, we shouldn’t have “best actor/scene” and “ethnic” either.

  4. Yes I see Hugh’s point and the gayvn producers are being lazy by taking an outdated nominations list in this racially heated political climate. Everyone is screaming Racist! at everyone and everything. I think we need to tone down this fueled name calling. Are there guys in sheets burning crosses on your lawn? Is it racist to have a sexual preference deep in your dick. I don’t like to fuck blonds…am I racist?

Yeah Hugh – you’re getting a TON MORE PUBLICITY from your Racist name calling than you did from your nomination. Can the term “White privilege” be appropriately applied here?

    1. Peope Lovin People

I think your making a separate argument altogether. Sexual preference has nothing to do with racial equality. A black, latino, asian, middle eastern, etc. man can still be attractive and not your type in the same thought process. The conversation the peace is trying to have is about equal representation. The gay community has suffered years from issues of racist tone. Almost as if we’ve forgotten the parallels and cooperations of pro gay and civil rights movements. Furthermore racial preference only becomes an issue when that preference is based on a level of superiority placed on white skin and privilege. Thanks to Hugh Hunter for being apart of the solution in his own way and by keeping the conversation going.

  5. Anyone who believes every person of every race should be attracted to every other race is flat-out fucked in the head. That’s like expecting every person in the U.S. to like and want to eat dog for dinner because some people in other countries do. The logic and irrational expectations are laughable, revolting, and simply wrong . . . the PC police be damned.

    1. You’re making irrelevant comparisons…you not liking a particular race to pursue sexually and/or romantically IS racist and discriminatory. You’re decision came from somewhere. Maybe you just don’t like the status of being w/ X race or the stigma it may carry or maybe stereotypes of X race make you not deem them worthy of giving a chance. It all stems from racism, discrimination, and prejudice and it’s ingrained culture that you picked up.

      1. I disagree. Expecting everybody to want to find someone else attractive, when they simply aren’t is exactly what rape culture is.

  6. Stop trying to make an issue of a nothing issue. Disgusting how the left will moan and complain and try to push their agenda down our throats. This narrative has to stop.

    1. Sexual predation on anyone underage isn’t a fetish, it’s a crime. You have never seen that here at The Sword. Nor will you. Innuendo is one thing. Facts are another.
