LISTEN UP, FAGGOT!: Beirut Will Make You Love the Accordion

Though Beirut’s music is especially hard to pin down after the release of the electronic second half of their latest EP (March of the Zapotec/RealPeople Holland), it tends to sound like old music, really old–especially the gyspsy-ish mix of horns, strings and accordions on their last album, The Flying Club Cup, which was influenced by Balkan folk tunes, or the Zapotec half of the new album which features a 20-piece band mostly from Oaxaca, Mexico.

Zach might not be gay himself, but he invited Owen Pallett, the gay lead singer of Final Fantasy, to write lyrics for and perform the song “Cliquot” which features a gay-sounding refrain about a male lover (though it’s supposed to be written from the perspective a widow who survived the Black Plague).

Below, we give you a couple sample tracks. First, a signature song from Beirut’s first album, “Postcards from Italy.” Then a dance- and gym-friendly track off the new EP called “No Dice.”

And here’s a live video of “Cliquot” being performed in a Brooklyn apartment with Ed Droste on vocals.
