Liza Retakes Stage, Blames Marriage on Encephalitis

The occasion is this week’s opening of her new one-woman show at the Palace Theater on Broadway–which is being presented as a ‘comeback’ much like her bomb of a ‘comeback’ show, also at the Palace but the real joy of the interview comes in her discussing the “hiccup” in her life of the past few years/decade that included marrying bug-eyed gay gold digger David Gest.

In retrospect, how does she explain the strangest interlude yet in a life not without notorious episodes?

“Encephalitis,” she deadpanned, with a little extra pop of the doe eyes.

The profile/interview is generally glowing and reverent, and it seems like every gay journalist in town got sent to worship at the feet of Ms. Minnelli in the last few weeks.

Below, Liza speaks with our favorite hottie newsgay (next to Anderson), CBS News/Logo’s Itay Hod, about her show–which is a tribute both to her mom and to her godmother, musician and arranger Kay Thompson who’s best known as the author of the Eloise books, and as the fashion editor Miss Prescott who sings “Think Pink” in Funny Face.

And not that we think the old gal should be doing splits and backflips, but the choreography shown here does seem to suggest she does a lot of standing still while her male backup dancers flit and spin around her.
