Omar from ‘The Wire’ Tops List of Toughest Gay Characters

Yes, we’ve come a long way gays.  Where there used to be only closeted minstrels who our moms thought were just “characters,” there are now at least a few examples of fictional gays who are also cops, murderers and cowboys.

AskMen.com, which bills itself as a “Men’s Portal” (heh), put together this list of the toughest faggots to appear on film and TV — 8 of whom are from the past decade and 5 of whom are from HBO shows.  They include Keith Charles, the cop who topped David on Six Feet Under, Vito from The Sopranos, Al Pacino’s turn as Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon, and Chris Keller on Oz.

We give them credit for putting Omar Little from The Wire at the top of the list, as he is also The Sword’s favorite all-time fictional gay gangster.  Omar carries a sawed off shotgun, robs drug dealers, likes to fuck light-skinned boys and spent much of the series avenging the death of a lover who some dealers had killed and mutiliated early on. Apparently, our own President Barack Obama named Omar as his favorite character, too!

Below, a clip of Omar with his boyfriend Brandon, before Brandon got wacked. And here’s a pivotal scene in which Omar testified against his enemies in court.

  1. I’ve never seen THE WIRE. I’ve never heard of two characters like that conducting an openly homosexual relationship in “The Hood.”

Only in prison or “On the Down Low.” I’d be surprised and delighted to know if a real gang banger has ever gotten away with it so freely, with the respect of his peers.

BTW Jay, if you like Omar, then you might like the black, gay biker gang from CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE, even though they’re less realistic than Omar.

They’re a bunch of black muscle queens, styled as leather and fetish punk rockers, who roll around on motorcycles with shotguns and defend Jason Statham from evil drug lords in L.A. The film introduces them at a dive bar, circling around a white guy whom they force to his knees with a leash, harness and headpiece. It’s HOT!
