no means complete, or even-handed) of stuff going on for those of the
homo persuasion this weekend in not just two meccas, but now three! San Francisco, New York, and LA. (Sorry, Cheyenne, we still may never
get to you).

Out in Africa: South African Gay Film Fest

outinafrica.jpg

Johannesburg, South Africa
September 4 – 14

The Out in Africa film fest embraces a tradition of non-discrimination that began over two decades ago with the emancipation of Nelson Mandela. The annual festival travels around various cities in South Africa, offering screenings, workshops, panels and networking functions to its diverse attendees. This stop in Johannesburg takes place just two weeks before the start of gay pride, offering a cerebral pre-party for Africa’s largest gay gathering.

Matthew Mitcham’s Gold Medal Ass

mitchamTH.jpg

We’ve got to admit we were secretly rooting for the Chinese divers. The American was cute, and the perfection from the hosting team did become a little redundant, but who doesn’t like an undefeated team of superhuman Eastern magicians every once in a while? Look, all we’re saying is that if it were a heterosexual Australian diver who committed this upset gold medal victory we would have been SO PISSED for our Beijing homegirls.

Is Olympian He Chong China’s Next Top Porn Star?

IN-He-Chong-Porn-StarTH.jpg

Maybe it’s the squatting. Maybe it’s the legs in the air. Maybe it’s the OMFG-it’s-too-big face he makes when he’s flipping through the air. Olympic diving may be full of compromising positions, but  Chinese diver He Chong takes the cake. He maybe the world springboard champ, but you don’t learn those moves in the pool. So we did some snooping …

Weekend Event Roundup: June 13-15

WeekendEventRoundup_A.jpg

Hey! It’s Pride weekend in Boston and DC, but we haven’t really gotten to covering them places yet. So here’s a quick roundup of some recommended venues for getting super drunk and slutty this weekend in the two meccas we call home, San Francisco and New York.

Another Pride Season Kicks Off: Prepare to Feel Ashamed

GC-PrideParadeSched08TH.jpg

Get out your beads and call your dealer: it’s still not over.  May marked the beginning of the gay pride season, which starts in Las Vegas and Long Beach and doesn’t end until fucking November when Palm Springs has theirs. We swear we are proud, sometimes. And we know it’s important for all you suburban and rural gays to strap on those Camel Baks full of vodka and descend on your nearest metropolis to drink and dance amongst throngs of your own for the first time since last year. We totally can’t wait.

Time Out New York Making Readers Get Naked

GC-TONYNakedNewYorkerTH.jpg

Time Out NY just debuted it’s annual “Horny Issue” featuring some self-art-directed nude photo shoots by readers, as well as a poll of which male and female reader should get naked for an upcoming shoot for the mag (in the men’s poll, we’re especially enamored with #s 3 and 13, who are pictured after the jump, as well as #17).  At left you see Joshua Katcher, a Brooklyn vegan who has decided to have himself photographed splayed out with vegetables and that sure is earnest.

Pink Pistols Fire at Supreme Court

HN-PinkPistolsTH.jpg

Personally, we’re lovers not fighters. That being said, we were thrilled to learn of an organization devoted to protecting Second Amendment rights and encouraging gays to arm themselves in self-defense. The Pink Pistols recently filed a brief in a case before the Supreme Court challenging a 32-year-old ban on handguns in the District of Columbia. Citing that “more anti-gay crimes occur in the home than anywhere else,” the Pink Pistols joined 68 other organizations filing briefs in the case, most of which opposed the ban.

CBS Gives Gay Soap Opera Supercouple a PG-Rating, Everyone Else Blueballs

MM-nuketh.jpg

It has recently been brought to our attention that there is a really hot daytime television gay couple on As The World Turns! Alas, their increasingly sporadic appearances on the broadcast have some fans getting their gay panties in a twist. The first gay-male couple on a soap opera to be given their own substantial romantic narrative, Luke Snyder (played by Van Hansis) and Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann)-commonly referred to as “Nuke” in portmanteau-have a dedicated fanbase of gays and straights alike who look forward to seeing the stages of their innocent romance unfold in a format usually reserved for more traditional and Christian-friendly plot lines like serial killers, evil husband-snatching twins, the living dead, witches, exorcisms, child rape, and its flagship lurid heterosexual affairs with gratuitous lingerie and softcore makeout scenes.

Ben Andrews to Playgirl: I Love Perky Tits!

IN-BenAndrewsPlaygirlTH.jpg According to the April 2008 issue of Playgirl, butt-humping porn star Ben Andrews loves perky tits, picnics in Central Park and the feel of a woman’s body. In true Playgirl tradition, the well-hung star of Gigolo, The Intern and Cruising Budapest doesn’t mention that he’s gay, although the breathless text (“Yes, that Ben Andrews!” they squeal) does note his appearances in Inches and Freshmen. This falls somewhere on the believability scale between a steam-room cruiser’s wedding ring and Tom Cruise marrying that Dawson’s Creek girl.

The Worst in Gay Marketing: Miller Lite

GC-MillerLiteTH.jpg Of all the industries to court the gay dollar, alcoholic beverage companies were first in line — and it’s a natural match because fags are all sad drunks in the end (jk!). Earlier, we looked at some print ad atrocities committed by Anheuser-Busch in the name of Bud Light.  Now we come to you, after the jump, with some examples from another longtime diet beer marketer in gay publications, Miller Lite. Miller Brewing Companies stepped into the gay fray as early as the 70s as a sponsor of San Francisco Pride festivities, and later as a loyal sponsor of the Folsom Street fair’ sponsorship which they had to quietly backpedal from in 2007 over controversy spawned by a certain Last Supper-themed promotional poster.

Steve Cruz’s Tips For Fending Off Barebackers

IN-SteveCruzFendsBareb.jpg

When we asked Steve Cruz about his sex life recently, he griped that everyone wanted to ride him raw. “I feel this pressure to bareback,” Steve told us. “In the city of San Francisco, it seems like when I hook up with [non-porn] guys, they’re more likely to push me in that direction.” When he has sex with other performers, however, it tends to be safer since they’re more vigilant about protecting themselves. “Maybe regular guys think I’m disposable because I’m a porn star,” Steve mused.

In the heat of the moment it’s annoying to deal with condoms and there’s always going to be temptation. Since someone’s always trying to stick it in a la carte, we asked Steve for some advice as to how he turns down those rabid dogs.

Is J. Lo Worth Your Gay Dollar?

JLo-ThomTHUMB.jpg

At Sword HQ, our taste in music is about as complex and diverse as the cast of a cable network reality show (that’s right, that complex). Since gays – a fickle, bitchy, demanding, selfish and notoriously bored demographic – are reputed to have somewhat stereotyped taste, we thought we’d experiment with our co-workers – a fickle, bitchy, demanding, selfish and notoriously bored bunch. So, you’re welcome. Each week we round up a small group of homosexuals from the NakedSword offices, lock them in a dark room with us and ask them to evaluate whether some new releases from gay-market-chasing recording “artists” are worth your sugar daddy/pimp/mom’s hard-earned gay dollar. This week: Radiohead and J.Lo.

After the jump, our colleagues’ analysis.
