MyComrade.com is an off-shoot of the East-Village-based fag mag founded by drag legend Linda Simpson (and her male alter-ego, Les Simpson) back in 1987 when we were just wee babes with no pubic hair and Ronald Reagan was still President. Midnight Mass 2008 Season Opens With ‘Showgirls’
San Francisco’s underground drag phenomenon, filmmaker and cult leader Peaches Christ is back again this summer with a new season of Midnight Mass, and the film series premieres this 4th of July weekend with the “most American movie ever screened,” Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 masterwork, Showgirls. Some call it a camp classic, others call it trash, but we would argue that Showgirls is a truly rare breed among cult films: a high-budget Hollywood tits-and-ass flick written and directed with intentional, intelligent, subversive wit by screenwriter Joe Esterhaz (Flashdance, Basic Instinct) and director Verhoeven (Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers).
Historical Homos: A Roundup of Footage from Prides Past
In anticipation of this week, we’ve been collecting footage of Gay Prides past, and wouldn’t you know, it wasn’t always so tacky and sponsored by beer and vodka makers! The first “pride” wasn’t a parade, but the Christopher Street Gay Liberation March up 6th Avenue in New York in June of 1970, commemorating the one-year anniversary of Stonewall. Then other cities, including San Francisco, launched their own Freedom and Pride celebrations. San Francisco, Other CA Cities Banking on Making Bank With This Whole Gay Marriage Tourism Thing
No sooner had Thursday’s ruling come down but the SF Convention and Visitors Bureau shot off a press release inviting gay couples to come get married in the city where it all started, calling the City by the Bay the place where “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history continues to be made.” Unlike Massachusetts, where marriages are limited to couples claiming state residence, California does not limit marriages to residents only.
