PlanetOut Finally Swallowed Whole by Here Networks

PlanetOut, the San Francisco-based company that has managed the PlanetOut.com and Gay.com domains since the dot-com bust, is finally meeting its end as it agrees to be subsumed by Here Networks LLC and Regent Entertainment in a deal worth $4.7 million. The company shall now be known as Here Media, and we’re guessing the final bullet in the head to PlanetOut.com (which hasn’t seen a redesign since the Clinton Administration) will be coming soon.

The once strong dot-com survivor PlanetOut has fallen on hard times and has been skating by with as much as $100 million in debt last year.  The company previously sold its cruise business, RSVP Vacations, to sluttier rival Atlantis in 2007. This was quickly followed by the sale of its magazine business to Here Networks this past April, comprising the porn titles Unzipped, Freshmen, Men and [2], in addition to news/lifestyle titles The Advocate and OUT.

Anyhow, we wish them well, but we’ll be the first to admit the world won’t really miss those tight-assed etiquette columns or the earth-shattering gay medicine cabinet quiz.
