Sean Cody Went Interracial & The Twitter Trolls Got Ugly

Even a cursory glance at the social media on Asher, Deacon & Landon makes “Got Racism? becomes rhetorical. The truth is we do. That’s not surprising. And the freedom in which it was expressed is onerous and sad.

The minute it was revealed that joining Asher & Deacon on Sean Cody would be Landon, what I referred Saturday to as a cyber revolt against Landon began in the gayblogespgere and on Twitter almost immediately.

When it was still Friday PST, my West Coast colleague, John Tegan of GayDailyHot had already posted,

“Reasonable people can disagree about casting Landon with Deacon and Asher. But based on my Twitter feed today, why do I get the feeling it’s more about thinly-veiled racism for many? To answer my own question, it’s because of the depth anger about the choice. It’s disgusting.”

John was also moved to add a complete post, “TO THE POINT→An Essay on Sean Cody, Racism and Objective Beauty” on the subject that should be added to your reading list.

As the weekend wore on, things just got worse. And while most of my fellow editors did delete the most heinous comments on their blogs, on Twitter, so many liberal, GOP-hating, Hillary voting fellow gay Democrats sounded like they belonged at a Trump Rally in Alabama.

If we stoop to their level. If we use their intolerance as a rationalization for making hate or hate speech acceptable to bandied about, then we have lost our way and become our own enemies.

racism in gay pornIn reality, this began the first time we saw Deacon. He was every inch the archetypal “white gay Adonis.” Then we met Deacon’s boyfriend, Asher. Though not as severe, Asher was not received with universal adulation often because he wasn’t another “white gay Adonis” they imagined Deacon should be with.

racism in gay pornThat lessened as Asher and Deacon appeared together, and then with Brysen. Seeing how much Deacon and later Brysen liked Asher somehow made him “palatable” to the initial naysayers. But the fact the Deacon & Asher were very into Landon and were quite candid about it, that did not get Landon any cover.

Just because we’re gay doesn’t mean we’re attracted to every man. Different strokes for different folks? Absolutely.

And do people have the right to express their opinions? Most definitely.

racism in gay pornPosting about a scene without taking the time to see it also nothing new. And it’s clear most posters hadn’t watched the actual movie. Did Landon finally get fucked again? No. Was the filming totally on-point? No. Is Landon G4$? Yes. There are fair criticisms to be made. But that’s generally not what people were harping on.

Does the fact there’s a POC and a Latino make the scene hot? No. It’s a hot scene because of the chemistry and action between the men in the movie. That makes diversity what it should be: just a detail.

asher deacon landon bareback sean codyNo one even said gay porn was an agent for social change or The Sword, GayDailyHot, Twitter or social media should be a bastion of homogenized niceties. But neither should the anonymity inherent in social media empower anyone to give voice to the kind of thoughts we’d crucify our detractors for saying.

The Broadway musical “Avenue Q” had a song called “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist” and it’s true. We are. The difference is, some of us challenge ourselves to evolve beyond it. And some wear it like a badge of honor.

Before we can effect change of the intolerance in the world and in our country, we need to start with the intolerance in our own heads. Two wrongs don’t make a white. Or make it right. And while that may be the way things are right now, that doesn’t make it right either.

  1. About a year & a half ago I was bullied & harassed daily by bringing up the topic of lack of diversity at BSB on their forum. And the result….. I was bullied & BLOCKED from posting at the Forum.
The Porn Industry is a Racist affair which reflects the attitudes of its demographic. Just another case of the ” oppressed” behaving just like the ” oppressor”.

  2. It’s NOT ” Just a preference “……… You’re Racist! Deal with it……. Try to learn…… Try to grow

  3. As a white guy in a 17 year, monogamous, inter-racial, same-gender marriage I can tell you that what I have learned during these 17 years is that most white people are the motherfucking devil.

Even here in Los Angeles, I have been floored by comments I’ve heard from both gay AND straight people. ALWAYS white. Always.

What we as human beings have done in the past, what we’ve taught to children, what we have allowed society to do to minorities for centuries will not be cleaned up quickly or easily, but it must be done.

Shine a light on the darkness. It’s the only way.

We ARE, after all, taking about something completely inconsequential – the amount of melanin in one’s skin.

Why on earth would humankind seek to continue the nonsense that is racism, when it is of benefit to none and harmful to all.

Be kind to each other, men. It’s so easy. No excuses. Be kind. Otherwise, what’s the fucking point of being on the planet? Shoe shopping? Brunch? Grindr?? Ridiculous.

It’s about kindness. Try it. You’ll see your lives change right before your eyes.

An unkind person will NEVER be happy.

  4. While I do agree that racism is out there…to take one scene and the comments regarding it and blow it out of proportion is just not right. I’ve looked at tons of comments regarding this scene, and it’s more along the lines that they didn’t like the combination of the models, editing etc…as opposed to the race of the models. In the article, it’s admitted that this scene was not on point, but that has nothing to do with race.

Sean Cody has had a lot more misses lately than hits, and bringing race into it seems to be more of a deflection from the quality of Sean Cody scenes lately.

    1. You right, and I don’t understand why many bloggers downplay the drop very notorious of quality in Sean Cody’s scenes this year. In all scenes, the quality has been low, the good scenes this year are counted with one hand. Malcom-Blake, Daniel-Jack and Daniel-Graham are the ones I remember. Also, the scene of saturday was mediocre, and a waste of that boyfriends couple. Even the Deacon-Asher-Brysen scene is totally disappointing if you compare them to scenes of old Sean Cody, such as Peter-Calvin-Joshua, and that, if is a legendary scene.

  5. You can’t control what’s in people’s minds. Some may argue it’s good to get it all out in the open no matter how ugly. I’m not one of them. Some things shouldn’t be though much less shared

  6. I do agree a lot of the haters are a bunch of racists, but many of those complaining aren’t. They simply do not find asher attractive at all and this group includes me. I am attracted to a lot of men regardless of their race. In fact i find latinos the most desirable when it comes to ethnicities. I am also attracted to alot of black men. And i find most white guys bland. I do not find asher attractive at all despite my preference for latinos. As for landon, i found him kinda hot before, but now he looks average. Deacon is above average for a white guy and i understand all the love he’s getting. Sometimes it’s all a matter of preference and it’s really annoying when people think it’s racism. Just because you’re not attracted to a certain race doesn’t mean you hate them.

    1. I completely agree with you, I have read many complaints about other models of Sean Cody (mostly white), saying how ugly or bad performer they are, and I have not seen any post about “white racism”. Why? Because giving your opinion of whether a person seems beautiful or not, bad performer or not, is not at all racism, that’s where we see the double standard with which we see things.

    2. in the article it’s made pretty clear that the target of the criticism was Landon, you’re deflecting the issue here. And racist comments about him being in the scene. I am certain the article does a pretty good job of explaining the ideals and reasoning why Landon was/is being targeted here.

It has nothing to do with preference, or finding one person attractive or not, it has to do with the white standard of beauty, and how Landon being clearly the blackest among them is less deserving of sharing a scene with White Adonis Deacon, then his brown skin boyfriend (and I’ve also read some hate filled rants about him too). Keeping in mind this is hundreds of years of conditioning, which the article also hints on, “Everyone is a little bit racist” it’s hard not to be when society has been pounding it into your head for centuries.

Is gay porn a reflections of Society – no. If that were the case every black man would be a thug, What gay porn is, is a business, and I am pretty sure that every business still caters to white people or at least white ideals, because those are the standards the world around. This is the real reason there is a lack of diversity, not just in porn, but all media. Reality sucks.

      1. As an Asian guy who has slept with plenty of black guys, I honestly don’t find Landon beautiful. To demonstrate my point, I showed that picture of them flexing together in the park to my mom, dad, two straight sisters, and one straight brother. ALL of them thought Deacon was a god, Asher was okay, and Landon was below average. So unless my entire family of Asians are racist, I don’t think the fact that many people don’t find Landon’s physical features all that attractive makes them racist. SC’s Philip is beautiful to me. LE’s Sean Xavier is beautiful to me. Phoenix Wellington is beautiful to me. Landon is just not. Deacon is so self-evidently beautiful that even if you could make an argument that Landon is beautiful, the very fact that you had to make an argument for it says it all.
