Rex Cameron does things his way. He put himself on the radar by harnessing social media and arrived on the scene as an HIV+ model. His journey to wellness and mainstream gay porn success is one of grit, inspiration, and a few tears along the way.
The Sword sat down with him exclusively to ask about living and working with HIV, what it’s like to get fucked by Ryan Rose and more. He held nothing back.
The Sword – Rex, thank you for speaking with us. We have chronicled your rise here at The Sword. Did you always want to be in the adult industry?
Rex Cameron: It means a lot, this interview. I thank you. And yes! I had always wanted to do gay porn. Always! I always found it to be beautiful and sexy.
You wrote very candidly about coming to terms with being HIV+ in DNA in 2014. Are you as healthy now as you look?
My CD4 count is 1109…and I am so proud of that. Getting to undetectable, staying there, and sticking to antiretroviral adherence, and regular blood work and specialist visits keep me healthier than most negative individuals. I work hard to have such excellent numbers and health.
Did being an out, poz model present any barriers to entering the industry?
So far it has been a smooth experience. I have received nothing but support, respect, and kindness from studios, performers, and the fans. I was really scared at first. But I need to live openly and not hide.
So, withholding your status was never an option for you. Did anyone advise against that?
Yes. I was encouraged not to disclose my HIV status in fear that I would not be able to get work. That the stigmas associated with HIV would threaten any chance of success I could have in the porn industry. But I can’t do that.
Have any studios closed their doors to you?
I had a Skype interview with one studio that wanted to cast me, but as soon as we talked about my status I was informed that I could not shoot with them. It was terribly heartbreaking, but they treated me with love and respect and compassion. I was thankful they were so kind to me when informing me that I could not film for them. I put my big boy pants on. I realize I am unable to work for a few studios.
Are you purposefully taking on the HIV stigma in the gay adult industry?
Exactly! I hope to help erase some HIV stigmas. I believe in being a face that represents living healthy as an HIV positive performer.
PrEP has been erroneously stigmatized too. Is that also on your radar?
YES! Educate yourself! Your safe sex method is a choice. Condoms have spared countless individuals from acquiring HIV and have my respect. But they are only part of the equation. Only advocating condom use alone hasn’t gotten us to significantly lower transmission rates. PrEP/Truvada should be definitely be discussed with your health care practitioner if you are sexually active.
Being on PrEP and using condoms aren’t mutually exclusive. Accurate?
To everyone that hasn’t been brainwashed otherwise by Michael Weinstein and the AHF, that is very accurate.
When you first disclose your status to a new screen partner, does that feel like “coming out” again?
Not for me. I am in no way ashamed to be openly HIV positive. I have worked with the BEST stars in the industry, and I have had nothing but love and support from all of them. They all have been knowledgeable on the issue and were more concerned that I was being treated well, and they went out of their way to welcome me. I am a lucky and blessed man.
Your most recent scene from “Amped” was amazing. What was working with Ryan Rose like?
OMG!! The most fun I have had on set. The entire experience was incredible!!!! It was my first time meeting Ryan … and as soon as I saw him I was floored. He is stunningly beautiful. That ass, that body … He was so kind to me. We got along well. Joked around. It was a light and breezy shoot. Just a total blast.
Is Ryan Rose as hot a top in real life as on screen?
Let me tell you … his dick felt amazing inside of me. Boy, can he fuck!
What kind of regimen do you have to maintain that ripped body of yours?
Thank you for saying that. I am a runner! I do marathons, and I’m a triathlete as well. My running and triathlons keep me lean. I think my biggest secret would be that I just don’t snack.
In addition to, or after porn, what else do you want to conquer?
I am going back to school this fall for International Relations and a minor in Peace Journalism. Over the years, I have become an international LGBTQ columnist. I want to keep covering humanitarian issues around the world with an emphasis on children in need. I am passionate about writing.
What makes your heart beat faster?
I love guys who are rebellious with a cause! A man that is intelligent and kind into the outdoors and like to travel. One who knows how to put me in my place, but to also build me up. A guy who is more than just a beautiful face. Someone into the little moments and experiences life and love present, instead of being into things and money.
Rex, thank you for your time and honesty. What’s the most important takeaway you would like people to have from this interview?
Just because one may be HIV positive does not mean they are spreading the virus or that they are not able to be sexual beings. Empower yourself to live, love, and make love.
Rex Cameron, may you live, love, and make love on screen and off for many years to come. I find him to be one hot, smart, and ballsy man. How about you?
