Ricky Martin Named “Entertainer Of The Year”

Why was Ricky Martin entertaining in 2010?

Ricky Martin – Entertainer of the Year

On March 29th of this year, Ricky Martin made a decision that would change everything. He posted a letter on his website and linked to it from Twitter. The letter outlined the process of writing his upcoming memoir, during which Martin came to realize that he needed to free himself of a particular burden. Writing about it, he added, was “a solid step toward my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.” He closed the letter, with a beautiful, eloquent, and simple declaration: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”

That’s Out, with Martin labeled “Entertainer Of The Year.” He’s on the cover of their annual “Out 100” issue. Julianne Moore is there, too. Did she come out of the closet? No. She’s on a horse.

If you’re cynical, you might say that Martin’s self-outing this year was nothing more than a publicity stunt to attract attention to his new book and album. But then, what’s wrong with using your sexuality to make money? Most entertainers–the ones who are attractive, anyways–do that. Martin pretending to be a heterosexual for years is no different than Madonna periodically pretending to be a lesbian. That his public homosexuality was delayed while he was selling records and doing a duet with, ha, Madonna, was a business decision. Please, don’t be cynical.

You can, however, question his title of “Entertainer Of The Year.” Is coming out of the closet, on Twitter, entertaining? Have you read his book? Listened to his album?

  1. apparently hes so famous he needed to be photo-shopped into the picture of the horse (not julianne moore you rude queen!).

  2. Give him a break. He is a great passionate entertainer, although he didn’t entertain us except the premier of his song on Oprah. Does that count? It was last week?
Adam Lambert is definitely the entertainer who deserved it but Ricky Martin seems to know how to make bigger headlines. Isn’t that what it’s about? I don’t fault Ricky, my dear dear hot hot Ricky… uhh, he is just playing the system very well. Oooh yeah, babe, that is the way I like that latino tongue moving…

  3. Man of the Year. Did he man this year?

I don’t think he needed to make a splash as an entertainer. He’s already an entertainer. This year, he summoned the strength to reveal something about himself that many people are afraid to reveal – especially if they are entertainers. Sure….most of us assumed he was gay, but that’s not the point.

He’s not on Entertainment Weekly, or TIME, etc. as the Entertainer of the Year – he’s on the cover of Out. Their subject matter is pretty specific. As such, Ricky Martin makes sense.

    And he sells magazines.

  4. I had no idea that Ricky Martin “Entertained” this year. He is entertainingly cute but other than that… idk… You learn something new everyday!

  5. Nonsense list. Adam Lambert gets no love does that guy? And he came out 5 minutes after American Idol and worked his little glittery ass off the last year and I sure heard him more on the radio than Ricky.
“Most Compelling”. Mmm-hm. You got a girl who was on coast to coast TV as the little tot of Sonny and Cher who later came out as the lesbian daughter of Cher and last year decided to complete the change 100 percent. And that’s not compelling but the queen flight attendant who opened the emergency shoot on the Jet Blue flight is?
Was pleased to see for ONCE they omitted that pile of nothing Perez Hilton.
