‘Smut Capital’ Premiering At Tribeca Film Festival

Mike Stabile’s (the original editor of this website!) historical look at San Francisco’s contribution to porn and gay culture will be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival next month. If you’re in New York, you should go! If you’re not in New York, sorry. Here are some clips from the documentary.

Stabile wrote and directed Smut Capital Of America with award-winning Raging Stallion director Ben Leon serving as editor and director of photography. The documentary short traces the origins of pornography back to San Francisco in the 1970’s, from movie theaters and glory holes to classified ads and streets hustlers, while also touching on local political reaction and first amendment freedoms.

I posted the trailer last September, and here are some more clips:

  1. The “Smut Capital of America” short is a spin-off piece that will eventually be used in the larger Chuck Holmes project to talk about SF that birthed Falcon.

  2. Wonderful!

I’m so glad it’s finished. I work for an independent multiplex, I will try to get them to book it for our gay film festival this summer.
