The first couple to emerge married this morning were Peg Oliveira and Jennifer Vickery (pictured at left), a 36-year-old yoga teacher and 44-year-old lawyer who exchanged rings near the New Haven farmer’s market this morning. Peg popped the question back in 2007, outside a cafe and to the tune of Alicia Keyes’ “If I Ain’t Got You.”
The second couple to get their license this morning was also lesbian–Barbara and Robin Levine-Ritterman, who were one of the plaintiff couples who sued the state arguing that any ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.
You may recall that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom twice chose lez elder stateswomyn Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon to be the first married in San Francisco–once to set-off the Valentine’s Day Uprising of 2004 and once again after the California Supreme Court decision took effect in June 2008.
As same-sex marriages became a reality in Massachusetts in 2004, the Massholes also saw a series of lez-dominated firsts–the first couple to file was Marcia Hams and Susan Shepherd of Cambridge, the first to apply in Boston were Julie Goodridge and Hillary Goodridge, and the first couple issued a license were Tanya McCloskey and Marcia Kadish.
Not to say that there aren’t plenty of fags out there dying to tie the knot with their slightly overweight lovers of ten years, but we’re just sayin. Whether it’s for PR purposes or not, three states and counting and it’s always the dykes front-and-center in the papers, beating a path to the altar. We think it has something to do with support of butt sex failing in national polls, but anyway…
