So What; Who Cares?

And Queerty found a peg!

Good thing Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is a gay rights supporter: Her intern Daniel Hernandez Jr., who’s credited with saving her life after yesterday’s shooting by ensuring she didn’t choke on her blood until paramedics arrive, is a homo.

What better time to be predictably awful than when the woman you’re writing about is still clinging to life? Can Queerty ever not be awful? Ha ha, no.

What is the story here? That Hernandez is gay, or that he saved Giffords’ life? Or is it both? How about neither? Hernandez’s heroic actions are minimized in the terrible sentence quoted above, having been written as an interrupter and shoved between his name (“Daniel Hernandez Jr.”) and his sexual orientation (“is a homo”). Would the re-written sentence “Good thing Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is a gay rights supporter: Her intern Daniel Hernandez Jr. is a homo” be less or more offensive? Is juxtaposing a word like “homo” with the visual of someone choking on her own blood supposed to be clever, or are you just trying to lighten the mood?

Also:

1. “Good thing”? If Hernandez had not been gay, he would not have ensured that she didn’t choke on her blood?

2. “Good thing”? If Giffords had not been a gay rights supporter, a gay man would not have ensured that she didn’t choke on her blood?

3. Or is it a “good thing” simply because there is, miraculously(!), some kind of rare synergy in the fact that a gay man helped someone who isn’t anti-gay?

4. I use the word “homo” pretty regularly. I would not use the word “homo” (a pejorative, even if you’re trying to be “funny”) to identify someone who just saved a woman’s life by ensuring that she didn’t choke on her blood; I would’ve used “faggot.” Just kidding. Use whatever word you want, but using a word like “homo” so flippantly tells me that you don’t really care that someone’s gay (which is supposedly something you want me to care about since you wrote a blog post about it)—all you really care about is using funny words while writing about mass murder.

5. It’s “arrived,” not “arrive.”

  1. I gave up visiting Queerty just after Thanksgiving. One reason was because they used terms like “homogay” on a regular basis. I probably shouldn’t be surprised, but I don’t miss it. I can easily find the same stories elsewhere without the issues described above.

I firmly believe that Queerty.com is actively working against LGBT equality in order to earn money by posting “controversial” stories. (The site makes money from advertisers based on the number of page-views.)
