Straight Men.com Director Explains Why Some of Their Scenes Look ‘Mechanical’

The latest episode in that slightly tiresome, Men.com-centric documentary series “I’m a Porn Star” which we first talked about last fall, features a lot of the perspective of Men.com director Ryan R., who might be one of the reasons that their scenes aren’t always as hot as they could be.

No disrespect to Mr. R., because he clearly seems like a seasoned veteran of the industry and he doesn’t mind being around a bunch of buttfucking. But between all the gay-for-pay stars who could probably use a little extra direction, the fact that Men.com is owned by a straight porn conglomerate, and Mr. R’s lack of, shall we say, passionate first-hand experience of the man-love, a picture gets painted here of a scene-making machine where chemistry and nuance might not always be the first priority.

The scene you see them shooting is 2013’s Rod’s Fantasy (trailer below), featuring a five-man orgy with Rod Daily, Duncan Black, Colby Jansen, Andrew Stark, and Bobby Clark.

Ryan R. says it’s “hard to make a living” these days as a producer/director, and he admits that a lot of what they do on the set every day is “very very mechanical.”

They also interview Steve Matthews, a longtime crew member on porn sets who talks about how things have changed over the years, especially since the internet has basically taken over.

Then they get into talk about L.A.’s Measure B, the law requiring condom use, and the issue of HIV testing in general. He basically sounds exhausted by all the testing stuff, and they show him asking, “Has Bobby even been cleared yet?” saying they have to postpone shooting until Bobby’s test results are in. Basically, the moral of the story is, testing is annoying but necessary, and it’s all they can do to turn a profit by pumping out these scenes in a mechanical fashion. Then they have a quote from Rocco Reed at the end saying that being told “you have to wear a condom” by a law “goes against what this country is supposed to be about.” (It’s a little ironic that the scene they’re shooting stars Rod Daily, who by the end of last summer was embroiled in that whole testing scandal because he tested positive before a shoot.)

So, is this a documentary about porn, or is it propaganda against the condom law?

Here’s the scene they were shooting that day, for reference:

  1. I’m sure the straight male and lesbian directors make it easier and more comfortable for the overwhelming number of gay4pay performers there. But, therein lies the problem with Men.com and its terrible scenes.

  2. Most of it has to do with the director. A director can make or break a scene. They set the tone and the models are going to perform based on their comfort level. I honestly don’t know how comfortable a gay man can be with a woman filming them having sex. I know a lot of people speak highly of Mr. Pam, but I’m not buying it. Those same people are having very mechanical sex and producing scenes that aren’t even jerk off worthy IMO. I don’t waste my time. Too many alternative and better options out there. I think a str8 director can make it happen and some do help the guys get comfortable. I’d be more comfortable with a str8 male shooting a scene than a female, but then you have the str8 directors who fail too. They just don’t get it.

  3. Maybe it’s mechanical because G4P’ers are real and they really can’t act and thus aren’t enjoying the sex. Which comes across on the screen. And seems mechanical. I mean, you have a straight director and straight dudes having gay sex. If they can’t act, then it’s just going to seem like terrible sex.

I like seeing passion. I think Colby Keller does that well but he’s gay, no?

    1. I’ve watched Colby Keller’s Men.com scenes and they’re boring and I like him…with gay performers.

The straight and lesbian directors at Men.com needs to watch a half dozen Treasure Island Media videos. THAT’s the level of intensity and passion that gay porn should be filmed with and it DOESN’T have to be bareback to get that.

      1. Amen. Straight owned, with a straight director and straight stars all going straight to the bank with gay dollars. Johnny Rapid is the worst of them all. Puke!

  4. Sorry.. But when I hear that term “mechanical” I think of robots.. Why not call it what it truly is “cookie cutter” or better yet highly choreographed.

  5. Saw the clip linked above. I tend to see things in black and white. Something I’ve never wrapped my brain around was g4p’ers. In my mind im like “if they’re willing to suck dick and get penetraded, they gotta be a bit gay. But now, I see that perhaps it is a job to most g4p and if you’re are being 2k to suck and be fucked then golly, you’re going to suck that cock like you’re mad at it!

        1. I can think of at a max two studios that may pay that and both lock you in with contracts and no guarantee of future work.

    1. There are other jobs out there. I don’t care what the PR has to say.

Some men are wired for gay sex, regardless of orientation they profess.

Do you wanna know how many “straight” married men who have asked to suck my cock? Do you wanna know how many of my girlfriends have dated a guy they thought had gay tendencies? Those girlfriends didn’t care, because a lot of women are so conditioned to think their vitality comes from being in a relationship.

There is just a heaping pile of crap being fed. People live off of bullshit.

  6. Hope it’s not too rude to say Men.com can go straight to hell with its shitty porn. Shame is, they have a lot of good-looking stars. Johnny Rapid is the perfect symbol for this site.

  7. I would actually be all for men.com releasing less scenes if it meant the quality of what they shoot improves. There is a very “by the numbers” feel about the way their scenes are set up, the way the performers interact with each other and the way the whole scenes are shot and edited.

Also too many performers have been featured in too many scenes together and it’s reached a point where the initial chemistry has gone. I do find it strange that a lesbian and a straight guy direct scenes for this company (figuring that they would be the last people that would ever venture onto the set of a gay porn shoot). This company could definitely benefit from more creative input by gay guys.

After more than two years in operation, the level of output that men.com have produced is impressive but there is a sameness that permeates this studio. Some new fresh talent (both in front of and behind the cameras) is what’s required to shake things up and give their scenes a new life and spin.

    1. I honestly don’t believe that the scenes would be better if the diminished the amount that they filmed. They can film 1 or 100 scenes in a week, they would all be mechanical so long as you have lesbians and straight males directing, because they will never understand what it is that gay men love about gay porn so much. They will never successfully capture the chemistry that so many other directors can easily do.

      1. @sxg – I do find it baffling as to why a straight man and a lesbian would want to work in gay porn when neither have nor ever will experience what’s it like to have sex and enjoy it with another man. I agree with you that only those who have been there and know it first hand can capture it’s passion and intensity hence why I think it would benefit men.com hiring more gay guys behind the scenes to take a stronger creative hand (pardon the pun) in making their scenes and content better……

        1. The one and only exception I will find to that rule is Mr. Pam. She’s been in the industry for a long time and worked with so many studios she’s done a great job of absorbing all of that experience and incorporating it into the scenes she directs.

      2. The reason it is so mechanical, is because they have bills to pay or they are living on paycheck to paycheck. That pretty much kills the passion experienced in sex.

  8. I used to be a member of men.com but the sex is so mechanical and boring, I cant stand to watch anymore. Plus everyone is afraid of cum. The site tests for STD’s plus they wear condoms, very safe site so not sure why so afraid of a facial cum shot or something.
