If Tony ‘Family Research Council’ Perkins, Brent ‘The Media Research Council’ Bozell, and One Million ‘Ellen is the Devil’ Moms are vociferously against it, chances are I’m for it. When it comes to The Real O’Neals, the new ABC comedy based on the life of Dan Savage, the fact our foes are against it is just a bonus: judging by the newly released trailer, this is a winner on its own merits alone.
One Million Moms is basically against everything according to the “Current Campaign” page on their site. Well, maybe not everything, just: IHOP, A&E, Taco Bell, Schick, Angie’s List, Cottonelle but not Baronelle, and of course, ABC Family.
But since no one can hate-speak as well as they can, as they sent to Joe of Joe.My.God of all people, here’s what they have to say about The Real O’Neals:
Dear Joe, If you didn’t know who Dan Savage is until today, it’s probably a good thing. But right now we need you to familiarize yourselves with one of the cruelest, most vile political activists in America. Why? Because ABC and Disney announced their plans to air a sitcom Dan Savage developed loosely based on his life. A perusal of Dan Savage’s work reveals a career built on advocating violence — even murder — and spewing hatred against people of faith. Savage has spared no one with whom he disagrees from his vitriolic hate speech. Despite his extremism, vulgarity, and unabashed encouragement of dangerous sexual practices, Disney-ABC is moving forward with this show, disgustingly titled “Family of the Year.” TAKE ACTION: Sign our Petition to Disney-ABC, urging them to immediately cancel plans to air “Family of the Year.” Then call Disney-ABC President Ben Sherwood at 877-660-5301 FREE. Urge him to cancel their pilot sitcom based on the life of hateful anti-Christian bigot Dan Savage.
But I will let Martha Plimpton (Eileen), Jay R. Ferguson (Pat), Noah Galvin (Kenny), Mathew Shively (Jimmy), Bebe Wood (Shannon), and Mary Hollis Inboden (Jodi) speak the words of writers David Windsor and Casey Johnson in what looks like must-see TV for the rest of us. And that would be Sword crush and underwear model Max Emerson playing the underwear model of young Kenny’s dreams.

I’m so grateful for Dan Savage and I sure dig him. It’s appealing to have such a stellar brain on our side. We’re lucky for him and I’m pretty psyched to see what the show is like.
Anyone else notice that the actor playing Modern Family’s Luke is becoming increasingly hard to buy as a girl-crazy teen? Anyway, ABC has been on a roll lately, with the exception of Fresh Off the Boat. They took Eddie Huang’s cool autobiography and watered it down into a miscast, derivative shitcom.
Don’t know about Luke’s character, but the actor playing him will definitely grow up to be a pretty attractive man.
As for Fresh Off The Boat, it’s way too gimmicky, and that fat little Asian kid is more obnoxious than Manny from Modern Family.
I can just conveniently forget who this show is based on and enjoy it for what it is… maybe.
As a guy raised in an Irish Catholic family, I hope the show has some staying power. I really want to enjoy it. Ever Irish Catholic family had one of those statues of the Blessed Mother in their homes, although ours was not on the top of the toilet tank. LOL
Hmmm, I love Dan Savage, and though clearly this show is only connected to his life in a very minor way, that would not entice me to watch it. It doesn’t look like the worst thing ever. My only quibble is that the son being gay is being equated with the other son’s eating disorder, and the daughter’s being a thief. Haven’t we been long trying to make sure people don’t do that anymore?!? That being gay is not something like an addiction or disorder, and cannot be changed, and it is also not like breaking the law, a compulsion, or a sin, and yet in this show… How did this happen? Definitely not something I would think Dan Savage would approve of.
He had an Irish and Catholic upbringing. In that type of upbringing, and during that time which was the 70s being gay was almost as good as those you just mentioned. I don’t believe this is a period piece so yes in this day and age it is a bit misplaced, but there are still some families who consider it a crime and definitely think it’s a sin so it’s still not too far off from reality. But I they’re twisting it for comedic purposes since this is a sitcom after all so I wouldn’t read too much into it.
The reason I am not planning to see it is because Dan Savage is a bit of a cunt. That said, I love Martha Plimpton, but I just cannot stomach anything connected to Savage.
CBS already had an Irish family sitcom that had a gay in it and it’s already been canceled, the McCarthys. But this one follows the current ABC formula of family sitcoms in that underage kids have a significant role on the show. I was a little bit disappointed that it’s loosely based on Dan’s adolescent life and not his life during the time he and his husband adopted and raised their son. But then again that already is way too similar to Cam and Mitchell’s life from Modern Family. Plus taking into account what I read in Dan Savage’s books, it’s definitely too raunchy for network television, maybe even for basic cable.
It looks good, but I’m hoping it’s not too much overkill with shows like Blackish, Modern Family, Fresh Off The Boat, The Goldbergs, The Middle and Last Man Standing already around on the network. I’ll definitely watch it.
Doesn’t look that bad but I doubt it ever lasts.
SO watching this if only for Martha Plimpton!
Dan Savage is a twat. Someone should revoke his toaster. Yes I’m a bona fide Dan Savage hater.
As am I….but this looks good :-/
It looks terrible. The first time I saw it, I recognized it for the garbage it was. Then I came to the Sword and saw that Dan Savage’s name was attached and realized why it sucked so hard.
