Just because everyone, myself included, is insatiably curious about Tom Daley’s whereabouts these days, please observe the outfit he modeled while celebrating Christmas at home with his family in England this week.
It looks like his fam couldn’t be more supportive of his recent coming-out, with his auntie Marie tying a rainbow ribbon around one of his Christmas gifts, someone giving him a pair of rainbow toe socks (gross), and taking things one step further with this apron that says ‘Gay Icon’ on it, which in Tom’s case is actually not ironic.
When you’re a gay teen who’s recently out and proud, you kind of have to go all out with the Pride gear and rainbow ring necklaces and “I Can’t Even Think Straight” T-shirts. Kudos to the Daleys for embracing the rainbow tackiness with open arms, and even encouraging it.
And apparently those horrible toe socks were a big seller this year, because Tom’s new boyfriend Dustin Lance Black got some for Christmas too, from his mom. (Black spent his Christmas in Utah with his family, doing at least one radio appearance to talk about the surprise gay-marriage ruling there.)

In related news, Dustin Lance Black has freakishly long toes.
Previously: TOM DALEY’S BOYFRIEND IS, ALLEGEDLY, DUSTIN LANCE BLACK
Tom did not label himself. He just said he was in a relationship with a man. The people in the pictures are not his family. The girl in the apron is his best friend. The socks were a gift from Tom’s boyfriend’s mum. They both got the same socks.
You can only tell that you’re a bisexual if you are 50-50 to both man and woman. If not you are absolutely either gay or straight.
Truly stupid.
Never mind the apron; what is the hunchback of notre dame doing in the background?!
Dustin Lance Black has oddly shaped toes….
Ouch that apron is like a punch in my eye…but hold on one sec, first he comes out as bisexual then two secs later he’s posting himself wearing a “gay icon” apron?
Well, picking an obvious one, Cher is a gay icon but not an icon who’s gay for instance
He may just become a gay icon for youth, who have never had a role model their age before who was as famous and respected as a athlete like Tom Daley is. In this case gay icons are more of a generational preference.. Sorry to tell you but for most teens and young adults, Cher is more like their grandmother, and some others don’t even know who she is. Tom Daley is from the same generation as today’s youth and someone they can relate to.
Agreed. Definitely am tired of these icons to the gay community, they’re not really gay icons! They just exploit themselves to our community because for some ungodly reason we fork over our own money to them.
We need more genuine gay icons like Tom Daley, Gareth Thomas, Jason Collins, and many other openly gay athletes. They do so much more in the eyes of the youth than we would like to realize.
He has a huge teenage girl following… he has to keep their hopes up…
Actually, he didn’t label himself… but that’s not my annoyance with this.
I get that he’s “new” to the lifestyle, but for someone who declared in his video that it wouldn’t change him, he still “fancied” girls and didn’t want to make it a big issue, isn’t it funny that all of a sudden, he’s all “gay icon” and pushing it to the forefront every other day now?
Apparently, I’m an ass for asking this question, but I’d love to know if anyone else sees it my way.
Eh. Going overboard on the gay stuff is something loads of newly-out people do. I’m sure that long-term he’ll go back to ‘normal’, but I’m not at all surprised to see this.
This. Some people tend to go overboard with their sexuality when they come out and it’s really unnecessary.
Tacky doesn’t even begin to describe those socks and aprons.
Queer kitsch has been re-imagined.
