Popstar Troye Sivan posted a video on Twitter last night where he reveals that he was catfished by “Russian hackers.” The singer appears shirtless in the vlog-style video and shares his somewhat hilarious story.
Troye starts out the video by saying that his manager came to him with an opportunity to talk with a huge star. (He also subtly drops that he and Justin Bieber were chatting in the DMs, but he won’t reveal what they were talking about. Hmmmm….) The singer became very excited at the opportunity to collab with someone famous and his manager revealed that she had a long phone conversation with Greta Thunberg’s father. Yes, that Greta Thunberg. The tiny, Swedish girl who is going to save the Earth.

Greta’s dad said the young activist is a “huge fan” of Troye. He also mentions a new program Greta is starting. It would involve A-list stars like Prince Harry and Leonardo DiCaprio and was set to be named “Stars Save the Earth.”
“My immediate reaction is, ‘Maybe that doesn’t translate into English right, cause that sounds kinda weird,'” Troye said. “We should workshop the name a little bit.”
Troye receives Greta’s number from his manager and gets in contact with her.
“Hi Greta! It’s troye Sivan here. Just wanted to say how incredible the work is that you’re doing – I’m so inspired by you,” Troye wrote in a Whatsapp text. “Here to help however i can.”
Before Greta responds, Troye gets a text from his manager. She figured out that she wasn’t actually talking to Greta’s dad on the phone and that they were being catfished.

“Now I died laughing. Like, to me this was the most hysterical thing,” Troye said. “That is the best plan ever. Whoever thought of that is absolutely genius. But also, the fact that my ego was big enough to be like, ‘Yeah, Greta Thunberg 100% wants to chill. She’s a big fan. We’re gonna save the planet together. This is gonna be fucking sick.’ It just completely, completely mortified me and made me want to die.”
The fake Greta continues to text Troye, but the star is leaving the catfish on read and not responding to their messages.

The same people who attempted to trick Troye were actually successful in catfishing other celebrities earlier this year. The pranksters are two “Russian hackers” who have previously hoodwinked Prince Harry and Bernie Sanders into believing they were talking to the real Greta. Bernie talked on the phone with fake Greta for 11 minutes and Harry had two separate phone conversations with the phony. Luckily, Troye’s manager was able to figure out the situation and put an end to it before it got that far.
