Merchant/Ivory was ahead of the gay 90s curve with Maurice–based on the posthumously published gay novel by E.M. Forster–which premiered in 1987 and was nominated for a single Oscar, for costume design.  It stars Hugh Grant and James Wilby and contains some man-on-man scenes that were fairly provocative for the time.
