The NOH8 Campaign is mostly known for providing thousands of people with professional Facebook profile pictures, but now they’ve joined the “It Gets Better”/bullying/DADT repeal movement. Here’s their new PSA, if you haven’t seen it:
Well, fine. I’ll do what I can? This ad isn’t for me (or you) though, right? It’s for straight people, who are bullies. Or it’s for people who know bullies or who are parents of bullies. Does the host of “Dancing With The Stars” hold influence over any of them? Let’s hope so.
But this isn’t about the ad’s effectiveness. It’s about Cindy McCain. People loved her so much, on Thursday, when this ad came out! And then, on Friday, Cindy McCain tweeted that she “st[ood] by [her] husband’s stance on DADT,” which made people hate her so much! John Aravosis wrote:
Did she lie today or lie yesterday? Either way, she’s a liar, and she should be removed from the NOH8 video because, as of right now, Cindy McCain is a hater. Not to mention, great message she just sent to gay youth. If someone pressures you, cave and support hate. I can’t believe I defended this woman over the past 24 hours to people who tweeted me, and messaged me on Facebook, and said she was a fraud. I argued that she had a done a great thing. And now we see the real Cindy McCain: Hateful two-faced homophobic fraud. Her lying homophobic face needs to be yanked from that video immediately.
All that hyperbole, but he’s wrong. Cindy McCain never asked for the repeal of DADT. She only acknowledged its existence, at the :56 mark. You can put it in whatever context you want, I guess, but you can’t call her a liar. Watch again.
Watch Cindy McCain’s eyes, particularly at the 1:11 and 1:13 marks. She’s reading from a cue card, obviously. Did she even know what she was saying? Did she know what the other participants would be saying and how all of their lines would be cobbled together? Furthermore, was she high? She always looks high to me.
Instead of being angry with Cindy McCain, why not be angry with yourself for ever thinking that she mattered? Be angry at yourself for smugly implying that there was some sort of trouble in paradise between Cindy and her anti-DADT repeal “hubbie” John. These people, both of them, are nightmares. Why in the world would you ever put any stock into anything they had to say?
Why would you want someone who says things like this saying things for you?
Finally, why not be angry with the NOH8 Campaign for trying to use someone like this in the first place? This is what happens when you rely upon self-interested B-List celebrities and political spouses with a history of drug addiction to spread your message. Sometimes things backfire! Sorry.
