Non-mainstream culture always finds its way to the center, doesn’t it? Gay slang and terminology rarely stay within community lines, but it definitely bothers some more than others. The Gilded Age actor Morgan Spector lit fires of his own in an interview, where he called himself “creatively a bottom.” He responded to the social media backlash, wondering why it can only apply to non-heterosexual identifying people.
There’s no question – the handsome actor is comfortable in his skin. He isn’t afriad to get slutty in front of the camera for a photoshoot or a movie role. He went full-on nude in 2016’s Split (not the M. Night Shyamalan one), and we’ve seen him go shirtless in Homeland. Now, Spector is married to fellow actor Rebecca Hall.
During a Los Angeles Times roundtable, he said, “I’m very much creatively a bottom. Tell me what to do and just let me obey.” Naturally, it made the rounds on social media.
In a recent interview with GQ Hype, Spector reminded the world that he’s a straight man and further explained his original comment. “I just made a joke, that’s really what it is!” he said. “I like being able to use my intuition and my intelligence to plug into somebody else’s ideas, learn their language, learn their way of communicating, figure out what the thing is that they’re trying to make, and then deliver that … I guess it’s more of being a service top, creatively, than being a bottom.”
The interviewer pointed out queerbaiting accusations, and he responded: “Straight guys can’t bottom? I mean, people can play with dominance and submission in heterosexual relationships. We’re living in a moment now where we’re exploding ideas of gender. We deconstruct, these things are not fixed … It’s theater, baby. We’re all playing in the same sandbox in a certain way.”
Gay social media continued its discourse, pointing out that he can be a bottom if he’s taking a pegging (being anally penetrated by a woman with a strap-on dildo).
What do you think: can straight men who only have sex with women be bottoms?

In my humble opinion, being “submissive” is not the same as being a bottom. I think you actually have to get fucked to be a bottom. Maybe Mr. Spector could use a lesson or two. :). Though it does beg the question.. if a straight guy gets pegged with a dildo, does that count as the same thing as a real dick and make him a bottom? Hmmm…
I think “being a bottom” means… you like things up your ass. Whether it’s a big, black cock… or a small, pink dildo. You like things up your ass. I’m 100% top…. and I don’t like anything up my ass. Not even my doctor’s finger.
I think this is much ado about nothing. I also think he made this statement knowing what would happen. Nothing like a bit of free publicity, especially with the new season of The Gilded Age starting soon.
