Here we go again…another day, another dumb jock showing his true colors on social media. We’re getting tired of these displays of gay hatred, and in this day and age, they are increasingly becoming more unforgivable.
In case you missed it, in the late hours last Saturday night, Anthony Edwards—a 21-year-old standout guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves—posted a quick video on Instagram. In it, he can be heard inside his car making fun of a group of men talking on the street. Because they are shirtless, muscular and some are wearing harnesses (presumably outside of a club), he assumes they’re gay. And he wants the world to know how he feels about that: “Look at these queer ass (N word), man,” he says as his female companion laughs. “Look what the world done came to, bruh.”
Indeed…what has this world come to?! The video was quickly deleted, but not before it was shared elsewhere for all of us to enjoy:

The next day (on Sunday), Edwards posted an apology on Twitter: “What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry. It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!” It’s a statement that I’m pretty sure started and ended with his PR team, lacking any sort of genuine sentiment or reflection.

Meanwhile, channeling their inner Sue Collins, the Timberwolves released a statement saying noting how concerned they were: “We are disappointed in the language and actions Anthony Edwards displayed on social media. The Timberwolves are committed to being an inclusive and welcoming organization for all and apologize for the offense this has caused to so many.”
You know what I say? Bullshit to all of it. So far, no other penalties have been announced (last year, NBA star Kevin Durant was fined $50,000—but not suspended—for the homophobic and misogynistic language he displayed in a very strange and very ugly feud on social media with actor Michael Rapaport). Will the NBA have any real balls and discipline him? In this day and age, money talks—and any lengthy suspension might ultimately cost the Timberwolves money. And who really cares? It’s relatively not that big a deal, right?
Again, bullshit. Even taking out the gay factor, what I’m equally perturbed by is that in 2022, a grown man thought it was no big deal to take out his phone and record complete strangers minding their own business, then posted it on social media to mock them. That says a lot about someone’s mindset and maturity, and is simply disgusting for any reason. (Remember when Playboy model Dani Mathers took a pic of a naked 70-year-old woman in her gym’s locker room, then posted it on Snapchat to mock her? Again, disgusting.)
Why are you so bothered, Anthony? A group of shirtless men quietly talking on the street gets you so pressed? Why don’t you get out of your car and go say it to all of their faces, you coward? (And if a few simple harnesses are so crazy to Edwards, let’s drop him off in the middle of a gay pride parade…his head might literally explode. Or he might embrace the odd fascination and curiosity that is clearly growing inside of him.)
The Sword has previously posted about the similar situation involving former NBA star Tim Hardaway, who repeatedly apologized for his homophobic statements (and they were doozies, like “I hate gay people”), but the pessimist in me says maybe all that effort was just a ruse to help finally get him into the NBA Hall of Fame. Is Anthony Edwards truly sorry? Or just sorry he got caught, and more concerned about his ability to cash in on future opportunities?
Oh wait, my bad…he goes by Ant. For such a small man, it’s a fitting nickname.

One thing that gets me is that he is from a minority group that have been mistreated for centuries but has the audacity to put down another minority? I’m sure he would be the first to stand up if someone disrespected his race or even the sport he plays! He’s a young sportsman that has just put a big Smudge against his name and his career will probably suffer for it! To bad mouth a group others that he hadn’t even met or talked to , seems a bit cowardice to me!

It is my dream for our society that one day, there will be multiple openly gay athletes in all major sports. These comments, however, are the norm in professional sports. The homophobia is all too real, and blatant homophobia is met with empty platitudes from ownership. This has inevitably kept more people from coming out during their careers. Thank goodness for Michael Sam, Jason Collins, and Carl Nassib – men who show that it’s possible. Until ownership and front offices value diversity, equity, and inclusion over profits and ticket sales, though, not much will change.

Tired of their bs apologies after they get caught! I’m sorry I was raised better than that. If you were raised better than that, you would not have done this in the first place. Very often when a man makes fun of men he presumes are homosexuals, he is insecure about his own heterosexuality. That may be the case with Anthony Edwards.

And you know if the tables were turned and someone had filmed some Black men on the street and made hurtful comments about them, I’m sure “Ant” wouldn’t have appreciated that at all.
